This author bases his book on experiential and affective(emotional) psychologies. Much is here, affective neuroscience, attachment, modern interpretations of mindfulness... There is even a chapter on defenses! No self-help author ever mentions defenses! Amazing!
I skimmed through much of the stories and scenarios. But atleast he doesn't badger you with quotes, or cheezy talk. He does not talk down to the reader, like some authors tend to.
This is a perfect book for any of us, but expecially for those who have difficulties feeling. It's not an easy quest, but as a head oriented person, I find my heart aching to feel something, anything at times, and my life being deadened. And no amount of mental approaches will help me. No visualization, insight, self-talk, cognitive restructuring... Even movement based approaches do not seem to get one very far. Only through feeling and working through defenses, till you reach the core intellegence of emotions, can true change ever take place. Emotion, when it freely moves through you, is more powerful than any drug, legal or street, can ever be.
