From the Author
At the tender age of five, I was already dreaming of making my living as an artist when I grew up. That dream stayed with me throughout my childhood and into adulthood until I made it my reality. I have a few reasons for writing this book. It is my hope that by sharing my journey, you will be inspired to follow your dreams and passions. I also hope that you'll save some of your precious time and possibly money by learning from my mistakes and from other experiences shared by way of my marketing tips. In addition, I've been teaching a class titled The Business of Art Workshop for several years at colleges, universities and cultural centers. By writing this book, I can share far more information than I could in those short class sessions.
From the Inside Flap
I am privileged to call Synthia SAINT JAMES one of my best and dearest friends. We were destined to meet which is why when President Tyree Weider of Los Angeles Valley College - where I was the Director of the Foundation - casually mentioned that Dr. SAINT JAMES had attended LAVC, I set out to find her. We met at a prestigious event where Synthia was being honored. Immediately, I was struck by her outgoing and easy personality. The vibrant colors depicted in her work are synonymous with her life.
We connect on many levels such as the love we share for travel, nature, oceans, mountains, world music, dance, poetry, lyrics and most of all, children. Synthia loves and is inspired by the enormous curiosity of children. Her mother, Hattie, knew she would be a great teacher someday. She might not have known that Synthia's classroom would take on different shapes and sizes as she paints and pens her lessons on canvasses, book covers, commissioned art, manuscripts, public art, poetry and lyrics.
Welcome to the world of Dr. Synthia SAINT JAMES! You are about to embark on a journey exploring a body of work with a global footprint. I trust that you, too, will be as in awe as I am.

Granted, there are some suggestions like "Always have a signed letter of agreement or contract with whomever you allow to exhibit your artwork." My next question, since I'm new at this: "What should I be sure is included in the agreement or contract?" That's the kind of thing that I bought this book to learn about, and- it's just not in there.
It's basically a book of lists: all of the famous people who have purchased her paintings, titles of paintings that there are zero corresponding images of, nice vacations with more famous people, awards, honors... which is impressive but didn't teach me much about marketing my artwork.
A comment on the book itself (rather than the content)- it's advertised as being 212 pages, but it's typed double-spaced. I guess that's to make it seem more substantial than it really is? Besides being a lot of wasted paper, it's harder to read lines of text that are spaced so far apart.
Despite the extra eyeball jarring, it still only takes a couple hours to read. But I'm not sure who I would recommend it to. There must be better books out there on licensing and marketing art, and fans interested in an autobiography can learn just as much from the bio page on her website.
