MERCER MAYER began writing and illustrating children’s books in 1966, and since that time, he has published over 300 titles. Open almost any of the award-winning author/illustrator’s books, and out may pop dragons, cuddly monsters, wonderful creatures, and endearing critters.

“Most of my books are about things that happened to me when I was a little kid,” says Mercer. “Now that I’m a big kid, I write about things that happen now, especially with my own children. They always help remind me of what it was like.”

Born in Little Rock, Arkansas, Mercer Mayer spent his childhood hunting lizards and snakes in the swamps near his home. During his teenage years, he attended the Honolulu Academy of Arts. He later received additional training at the Art Students League in New York City. Upon completion of his studies, he set out with pen and ink to write and illustrate a collection of children’s books, reflecting many of the adventures he experienced as a child.

In 2007, Mr. Mayer was commissioned by Laura Bush to create the artwork used for the National Book Festival held on September 29 on the National Mall. He was an honored guest to the event, giving a demonstration and autographing hundreds of books for fans who attended.

I've loved this book since I first read to my small children, sons as well as daughters. I've just purchased this copy for my three-year-old granddaughter. Liza Lou is a delight. She faces several unsavory characters in the Yellar Belly Swamp when she runs errands for her mother, like the Swamp Haunt, the Gobbledy Gook, a witch, and others. They all threaten her and she remains unflappable and fools everyone of them. She is a very good example of girl-power, child-power in the face of frightening things.

Mercer Mayer's art is wonderful, his dialogue precise and believable. His heroine is sweet and strong. And I love her buddy, the possum. I've read many of his works and this is my favorite. In fact, it's my favorite young child's book.

I can recommend this wholeheartedly. I hope you enjoy this as much as I. Recently I read this book to my grandmother friends and they, too, enjoyed it.

I first read this book when I was a 2nd grader. I had to check it out every time I went to Library. I just happened across it on Amazon and could not believe it, as I thought it was out of print. Of course I had to buy it. And you know what, even at the age of 40, I still love it and it brings me back to the days when I would sit under my blankets at night (when I was supposed to be sleeping) and read it may times over until I fell asleep.
Fast shipping and book in wonderful condition as it is new of course. If you have kids, get this book, it will soon become a classic favorite:)
