Lizard Lunch and Other Funny Animal Poems for Kids: With Animal Facts, Puzzles, and Fun Activities Paperback – March 25, 2012
About the Author
Alina Niemi has been known to catch cockroaches in the middle of the night to feed to her ducks. She figures that's why they call them bird brains--because they haven't figured out where to find the cockroaches yet. Then again, they might in fact be brilliant, waiting for her to serve them a midnight snack, instead of having to get it themselves. Hmm. She is the author of The New Scoop: Recipes for Dairy-Free, Vegan Ice Cream in Unusual Flavors (Plus Some Old Favorites.) She is currently working on a vegan soup cookbook and more children's books.

The first section of the book is a fun read about various animals. What makes it unusual is that each page features both a funny, silly poem and a brief, interesting description of a particular animal. My sons really responded to this, as they laughed and learned with every page. Each page has a funny illustration, which my sons also enjoyed.
Many of the animal descriptions draw from the author's experience of working at the Honolulu Zoo, so there is a special personal touch to the entries. For anyone who might have issues with zoos, you can use these points to discuss your views on the matter, as I did.
The second part of the book is 11 pages of activities, including mazes, match games, coloring pages, a crossword puzzle, letter mix-up, word search, and animal quiz. My older son enthusiastically jumped to the puzzles that interested him, and my younger son was excited by the remaining activities. It was good to have puzzles for both of them.
This is a short book, definitely good for a day or two or three of intense interest. Once the activities are completed, that section can't be done again. The first part can, of course, be read repeatedly.
Lizard Lunch was a fun book to share with my sons. Poetry, nonfiction, laughter, learning, comic illustrations, and games all in one book!
What I like is all the funny things you can laugh about and how it talks about what the animals really are like and what it does. The Poems are really funny and silly and tell you great stuff. I think kids K-4 would like this book because it is funny and serious at the same time. They will love it. I also like the puzzles you can do at the end.
This book delivers what children of all ages need-- imagination and fun!!!
