My kids also loved all the noises that Lizzie makes with her flip flops as she walks along the beach. I think the book really captures the feeling of being at the beach. The beautiful illustrations really make you feel that the ocean is crashing upon the shore and I love all of the retro graphics! This one is a winner at my house.
IMPORTANT to note that the electronic version of this book is most definitely NOT suitable for all devices and I would go as far as to suggest that in its current condition it is not suitable on any electronic devices. Although it downloaded onto my Kindle Paperwhite it was obvious as soon as I opened the book that I would not be able to read it from there. When that happens I can normally enjoy/read the book on my Cloud. Not so with this book. Even on my 17" laptop there are portions of this book that are unreadable! Such a shame as I am sure this is a great book in hardback.
I downloaded this book onto my Kindle. I was not required to write a review but chose to do so. Thanks, Liz
This lovely tension between Lizzie’s joie de vivre and the oncoming tragedy facing Lou Seal is revealed largely through the illustrator’s magic. Patricia Keeler lets us in early on the possible disaster awaiting Lou Seal and while Lizzie is largely unaware we watch as Lou Seal’s demeanor changes. Lou Seal is worried. We want to save Lou Seal. “Look Lizzie, look!” we want to tell her. Brilliantly, without having to redraw the smile on the face of the toy, Keeler gives us to understand through perspective and contortion Lou Seal’s awareness and misgivings.
But not to worry, Lizzie is nothing if not a capable kid. She is going to figure this out. And this is only one thread of the story—what will Lizzie do about her beautiful new polka-dotted, flip flops which meet their sad but separate ends? Well, we already know that Lizzie is a clever one so you only have to read to find out.
Meanwhile, we get to notice the charming, retro surroundings that frame Lizzie’s sea-side life. Her trailer is filled with the bits and pieces of fishing life; the boardwalk with bicycles, fishermen, and peanut sales; and the seaside is filled with the rich traces of sea life. All of this keeps us looking, looking, looking. Expect too that your young listeners will be engaged in a wondrous array of sounds—thwak, flap, scooch, sss. So they will be listening, listening, listening as well. Need I say, this book engages all the senses while reeling out a picture book tale worthy of any listener? And for the younger set, it is the perfect beach read!
