Cafe La Llave Espresso is one of the country’s best-selling espresso brands particularly among Latin consumers. It is dark-roasted, intensely aromatic with a rich, strong taste.

'Llave' means 'Key' in Spanish. Drawing from its history, Cuba is the key to the Caribbean and the green color signifies hope in going back to the homeland.

A History as Rich as Our Coffee

The Café La Llave story begins almost a century-and-a-half ago when two brothers, Jose María and Ramón Gaviña, arrived in the New World with a simple dream – to seek a better life. It is in the rich coffee-bearing mountains of southern Cuba where their story began cultivating some of the world’s finest coffees. The rest, as they say, is history.

From growers, the brothers then started roasting coffee in their estate, Hacienda Buenos Aires, gaining the respect and love of the community. It was also here where Francisco Gaviña was born; where he raised his 4 children teaching them the art of coffee - growing quality coffee and roasting it to perfection.

Leaving Cuba during the revolution, Francisco and his family settled in Los Angeles, California returning to the coffee business in 1967 – fulfilling a dream of bringing an authentic taste of home to Latinos everywhere.

I've been hunting for a more eco-friendly alternative to Nespresso pods since getting my first Pixie in 2013. I had high hopes for these, especially for iced coffee, since the La Llave bricks work so well and have so much taste. I am sorely disappointed. After spending $35.00 on what were supposed to be "intensely flavored" coffee pods, I find I have to use at least two pods to get anything resembling the flavor of a Nespresso or Starbucks Nespresso pod. Extremely disappointing. The only good thing is that they're supposed to be biodegradable. If it's going to cost twice the money, I'd rather just use one pod at a time and send them in to Nespresso using the free bags they provide through their site, for recycling. In the end, that's less expensive.

I've been buying these pods for the last few years (regular and decaf). The flavor is not up to Nespresso standards but they are pretty good (strong with good crema, maybe a bit too bitter). But good value. Regular pods are still good, but something has gone wrong with the way the decaf pods are made. They no longer brew normally and end up just dripping the coffee out. Regular Nespresso pods and other brands work fine in the machine.

I love the flavor of this coffee. The first time I purchased it I was so concerned thinking that my machine was going to break. Seemed harder to use this type of capsule on my machine and that the coffee was having a harder time coming out. I can attest after months and months of using these that it causes no harm to the Nespresso machine.
I did learn some things about my Nespresso machine that I did not know before from a rep.
1) After you make your coffee immediately release the pod.
2) close the empty machine again by pushing the handle down. As if you were making another cup of espresso. Heat it up. Put an empty cup under and press to let water out until it runs out clean. Throw that water out.
3) open the latch and leave your Nespresso machine unlatched to air out. This should be done every time you use your machine so it can be clean and not clog and your La Llave coffee pods will work much better if you practice this every day. Any coffee pods will work better.

Great Taste! But is it decaf?

First the good: Absolutely great taste. Unlike many pods this one scores big here.

Now the mystery. I am very sensitive to caffeine in the afternoon after 3 p.m. Affects my sleep for sure if I drink a regular cup of joe. Switched to decaf for this portion of the day to get my coffee fix. And indeed when I used other decaf brands like Lavazza, had no trouble sleeping. Here comes the twist. Last two weeks with being up all night, I had to figure out what in my lifestyle has changed to affect it. Then stopped drinking this and back to getting my Zzzs as I used to. conclusion: I think this may be less "decaf" than the regular "decafs" out there.

The capsules aren't made for my original nespresso machine

The capsules just fall right thru the chamber when placing them. You have to tweek it somewhat by gently placing them in a angle that will make it stay and then quickly close it so it wont fall thru. Once turned on it trickles as a drip rather than a smooth flow. I don't understand how others had posted such good review of this product but this is why I bought it to begin with. I thought Amazon had cracked down on false reviews but I think this product slipped thru the cracks.

Great Product, But Not An "11"!

I bought these for my Nespresso machine, since the reviews were good, and they were a lot less expensive per pod. The flavor was very good, but sadly, they weren't close to as strong as suggested, nor strong enough to be an "11" Nespresso pod alternative. In order to get the same amount of flavor, I had to use two pods instead of one, making the cost actually more than the Nespresso ones, so I put in for a return. I didn't realize coffee (even completely unopened!) were non-returnable, so we gave some away, and doubled-up the rest until they were gone. If you drink these as espresso, or don't mind a milder cappuccino, you'll love this, but as a 1 to 1 Nespresso replacement, not so much,

I might be a noob when it comes to espresso, but I know what I like taste-wise. I enjoy coffee in worlds of different flavors, and just got into nespresso. I've tried some of the other flavors, and bought this because of it's intensity and price mixed with being decaffeinated. This works great with my Nespresso Inissia original, with no gotchas or anything. It works without a problem, and tastes great! I used it was lunga, programmed with a bit more volume so it was a touch thinner but not by much. I think this will be my default one for a while, and I'll try it in different volumes and ways.

Not a flavorful roast

This purchase of decaf was a disappointment. The description says intensity 11, but that's not what I experienced. The flavor was mild, and the color of the liquid as it poured into the cup was medium brown, not dark as I would expect. I looked at the pod after brewing, and the punctures did not look the same as on the other brands I have used (Nespresso, Starbucks, Peet's). The capsule shape is different as well, and the holes on the bottom were smaller than on the usual cone shaped bottom of the capsule used on other brands. I will be using these for a long time due to the quantity purchased, but I will never buy this brand again.
