In 1970 the series "Chespirito" debuted in Mexico. Comprised of assorted comedy sketches, the viewing public was treated to a collection of characters like Dr. Chapatín, los Chifladitos and el Chaparrón Bonaparte. "Chespirito" also gave birth to the ever-popular "Chapulin Colorado", and later "el Chavo del 8". Both characters became so well-loved that they were given their own series, which ultimately opened the doors of the international market to Mexican television. In 1973, these series were seen in most of Latin America, and maintained their initial high ratings for 25 years without interruption. Chespirito is still broadcast throughout the Spanish-speaking world.
