What a great album! From start to finish it has wonderful music. Maybe an under-appreciated classic. By the way, it's not all Lou Reed. Doug Yule plays a large roll on this album. YULE NEEDS TO BE IN THE R&R HALL OF FAME. PERIOD.

I really love this recording. I discovered it because I liked the cover. I took it out of my local public library, and was amazed at what I heard. I had never heard of the Velvet Underground before. (It was 1970 and I was 13) It was my introduction to Lou Reed's songwriting and singing. Imagine my surprise as I went backwards through the rest of the Velvet's catalog. What alot of information for a 13 year old to take in!!! There are certain songs for me that no matter how many times I hear them, I am right back into my first time and the love of that recording. "Who Loves The Sun" is one of those songs. Doug Yule's vocals too this day just amaze me. Lou Reed's reality check of what and how people see things associated with a lost love just amazes me. I have reflected on this many times in his writing. I gave a copy of someone at work and said, this is one of my favorite recordings I think you should hear. He gave it back and said he did not care for it. What a pity, I thought, this brilliant recording and you don't get it.
Ahh, but so many of us do. Buy it. It should be in your collection. The 5.1 mix is interesting, but I would have loved to have heard what Steve Wilson would have done with it in multi- channel. But nothing can ruin this one for me.........

Loaded : Completing the Velvet Underground's Legacy

Loaded, is the Velvet Underground's fourth and final studio recording.
Released in September 1970, one month after Lou Reed calls it quits and begans solo work. Maureen Tucker is absent from 'Loaded' out on maternity leave. "Oh Mo, where did you go?" - The VU really should have waited.
By now, new bassist Doug Yule took over as lead vocalist on far too many tracks. Yes, the band was on the edge of breaking up.
Despite all of this, as always The Velvets still produce a fantastic album.
'Loaded' is the VU's most commercially accessible and the band finally signed onto a major label. Although like their earlier lps - 'Loaded' didn't sell very well.
This last album does contain some really wonderful tunes. Includes : the fun, rollicking track "Rock & Roll" and "Sweet Jane" - the guitar bursts on "Head Held High" although it may sound like a repetitive generic rock song by many. My personal favorite track, the opener : "Who Loves the Sun"-
Although much more direct and different then earlier outputs, which of course can be a good thing. This album features one of the VU's biggest stinkers = "Lonesome Cowboy Bill" a country hillbilly type of Rock sound that Lou Reed never should have attempted.
-Loaded- does complete the Velvet Underground's Rock legacy. An end to a highly influential rock band as Reed and Morrison experimented with alternate tunings and fuzzy noise later copied by future bands. -
Such followers (many are favorites of mine) who were influenced by the Velvet Underground include CAN, Television, The Fall, the Dream Syndicate, Pavement, R.E.M. and continuing the New York no-wave tradition: Sonic Youth.

Let me begin by stating that I am not a huge VU fan. I heard there first three albums and thought they were ok. I never understood all the hype surrounding this band. I would read comments that stated they were better than the stones more original than the beatles, and my response was always that these critics must be smoking crack or something of that nature. One day I was reading about an album that went virtually unnoticed but was worth seeking out. The cd in mention was the velvet undergrounds loaded. I thought to myself what do I have to lose, Ive heard everything else by this band I might as well finish what I started. Thats when it happened, the opening track who loves the sun came on and I loved its quirkiness and humor. Casually rolling into the next outstanding track sweet jane an obviuos highlight made me really take notice. Reeds singing and acoustic strumming fill out this song perfctly. Rock and roll was next and by this time Im cranking this cd to maximum volume. I wont go over every song to save your (and my) time. Sweet nothing has to be mentioned. Some have called this the velvets hey jude the way it builds and thats pretty fair to say however, This is a classic in its own right that doesnt need to be compared to anything else. Alot of people including VU themselves have disregarded this album as mediocre or to commercial. In my opinion they have never been better.

i've been a velvets fan for more than twenty years. since my highschool days. i remember that all the bands that i loved (including r.e.m. and the smiths) had listed among their influences the velvet underground. i took it upon myself to learn more when i heard "sweet jane." i love the velvets: hard/soft, dark/light. i know some fans prize the velvets for when john cale was a member, while others prefer the more "mainstream" sound that the band produced while doug yule was a member. but, the velvets never went mainstream, so why not enjoy the songs for what they are-great music. "loaded" was finished without lou reed; and, maureen tucker was out on maternity leave. the albums first three songs, "who loves the sun", "sweet jane" (in it's original, un-edited version), and "rock and roll" are perfect. you also get the demo of "ride into the sun" with doug yule on vocals. i really do believe yule is underrated as a velvets member. he had a great voice; and, was more than capable as a musician. "ride into the sun" is also my favorite velvets song (although my personal fave version is the instrumental version that can hears on "another view." the song doesn't need any words-it's that beautiful. there's also a great demo version of "i'm sticking with you." i adore maureen's child-like vocals and acoustic guitar. you can't be a velvets fan and not have this in your collection.

'Loaded' is the greatest album ever, with 'Rock and Roll' being a street song, the catchiest, with cachet, ever. 'Train Comin' 'Round The Bend' sounds like a train comin' 'round the bend,- 'n the farmin' an' all lacks cynicism.
'Head Held High' is a thumpin teen' anthem with close knit powerful drumming from Mo Tucker. Drummin' takes the credit in 'Oh Sweet Nuthin'- at the end, and Ginie said there's nothin' goin' on at all. 'Rock and Roll' IS that song that Gina was shakin too. Lou, Take a bow.
'Sweet Jane' is the rock and roll song- heavy acoustic guitarin', kaleidoscope-soundin' start, and so far ahead of its time. 'I found a reason' is the Elvis pastiche, which was the same marvellousness as 'Maybe I Didn't...' (well, nearly) 'n that shakespearian ('now the stage is empty) Elvis song.

Sounds fresh and timeless to me, for a '69 album. I think it's the raw deliveries like on hold your head up, or the way everything is recorded. This album gives me similar feelings to Raw Power legacy mix from Stooges, in how it has a certain timelessness about it - barring maybe the song New Age; but I don't know if that was supposed to be an ironic outro or not. In any case the album was underground enough to feel completely fresh to me as a new listener. In other words: there's no songs on here that I've heard before anywhere, and I like that, because it lets me forge completely new associations and create new memories.

I've heard opinions that this new traditional drummer they used here took something away that previous VU offerings had, but to me it makes the album accessible as a rock album. The drumming on previous albums makes those much less approachable and harder to digest. Also this being the last album with Reed in the band also gave it an interesting bent to me as I also discover and delve into Reed's solo work as a new listener.

Ah loaded! My first velvets album which I first brought in 1985. Love most of the tracks on here. Plus the extra tracks make it even better.
I originally had it on vinyl and wore it out.
This cd sound quality is excellent.
