Very informational. The story is written from the lobster's point of view. I think this makes it easier for little ones to relate and understand. We moved to Cape Cod from Seattle. Lots of lobsters live in the Atlantic around here. We also took a summer vacation to Maine where we went on a boat in the bay by Acadia National Park and Diver Ed brought up lobsters, and other critters, for this kids to touch. On vacation we also went to a lobster hatchery. This book cemented all the things we learned on vacation! Love all the Smithsonian animal books.

for a little 18 month old who likes lobster drawings in the cookbook it turned out to be so scary he wouldn't even look past the picture of the lobster with a crab in it's claws! But for older children, it's great with lots of facts, gorgeous paintings and a real winner. Except it could be VERY SCARY! for a tiny one.

The actual size of the book was a lot smaller than I expected. It's smaller than a postcard. But that said, the illustrations and story are really great -- interesting AND educational, good for kids 5 to 12. I'm a marine biologist and have taught environmental ed to grades 4 thru 12, and I feel that this book is a cool little tidbit to pass on to kids.

This book is very nicely done. I bought it for my soon to grandson who will be growing up in Gloucester, MA a fishing city. This book will be nice for him to learn about the ocean.
