Amy Cotler has worked as chef, caterer, cooking teacher, food writer and farm-to-table advocate in New York and New England before moving to Mexico. (Although she's often in the US.)

She's the author of several books, including: The Locavore Way: Discover the Pleasures of Fresh Locally Grown Food (Storey Publications); Fresh from the Farm: The Farm to School Cookbook (Massachusetts Department of Education); The Secret Garden Cookbook (HarperCollins); Wrap it Up: Bold and Bright Sandwiches with a Twist (Rivers Press) and One Pot Vegetarian Dishes (HarperCollins).

Ms Cotler has lectured before small and large audiences at numerous venues, including Cornell and New York University, the Annual Chefs Collaborative Summit and the National Restaurant Association Show in New York and Chicago. She's taught cooking, writing and culinary history at many schools, including The Culinary Institute of America and The Institute of Culinary Education. I’m the founding director of Berkshire Grown, an early New England farm to table initiative that has received national recognition.

For six years Ms Cotler worked as the host of four forums on The New York Times on the Web. As a major contributor to Joy of Cooking, and over the course of her career she's developed close to a thousand recipes for that book, as well as for clients and her own books and articles. She's appeared on The Food Network and many public (and private) radio stations. Visit her at my website: amycotler.com.

This was a book recommended to me by a close friend who really enjoyed it. I am just starting to learn about eating local and this is an easy to read and understand way to begin.

I checked out this book from the library so many times I decided I needed to add it to my collection.

This was an excellent book. It talked about how to discover locally grown food but without some of the eliteness/food snobbery that tends to dominate the local food industry. I kept the book on my Kindle mostly for the end section which tells you how best to prepare any unusual produce you might find in your CSA box. The only thing that kept it from being 5 stars is that it was a little lengthy for the topic.

Good read

A friend gave me this book and I loved it. Cotler is a fun, engaging writer, never a dreary scold. She presents information about the slow food movement in a yummy way that's easy to digest (sorry, couldn't resist). Now, when I go to the market - be it the supermarket or the Greenmarket - I'm much more aware of what I'm buying and what its provenance might be. Sure, I still might buy the Chilean asparagus because it's cheaper and comes out earlier than my local farmers'. Cotler doesn't expect her readers to be strict fanatics. (Ya gotta start somewhere!) But, after reading the book, I definitely savor the opportunity to buy seasonal, locally-grown food, which, as Cotler points out, is not only good for the planet, but a treat for the palate. Local food is just fresher and more flavorful. I also loved the recipes Cotler sprinkles throughout. They're painless! Cotler makes clear that fresh ingredients are the main event and that they don't need a lot of fussing. City-dweller that I am, I only wish I could have my own garden out back. Oh well, I do have the Greenmarket, and it's time to go pick up some ramps!

If you're new to the local food movement, this book is a great place to start. Not only is it an easy read, but it's chocked full of practical information that the reader can use every day. Ms. Cotler motivated me to do a search for local produce resources and I hit the jackpot! If you can't grow it yourself, this book can give you lots of ideas of how to obtain the freshest food possible.

I'd highly recommend this book. Ms. Cotler, who seems to be both a serious foodie and social activist, been doing this for awhile and really knows her stuff. There's lots out there on the subject, but this book covers everything you need to know to becoming a locavore -- practically, clearly and intelligently. It focuses on both the pleasure and practical side of eating locally. I've been at this awhile and still found it extremely useful, but I'm giving it to my friends, even the ones who aren't eating locally yet, so they'll know what to do and get inspired too. An added plus? Lots of references, recipes and recipe ideas, a great layout and FUN to read.

I just finished reading this book and I'd recommend it to both beginning and knowledgeable locavores. In fact, I wasn't even sure what a locavore was until now. The book is written in a friendly style by a woman who clearly knows her stuff. Its full of useful information from shopping and seasonal cooking, to how to find local food when dining out. There is a reference section with ideas on how to cook every vegetable, wonderful recipes and a fabulous glossary explaining all the terms. I even loved the illustrations. This book was a find.
