Deadbolt locks are generally either mortised or surface mount and are used in a wide variety of door security applications. A mortised lock, also known as hook or flush bolt, involves cutting into a door for mounting and may be keyed. These are generally security locks and are not intended for convenience in the way that the latch actuated by a doorknob is. They frequently may be operated from either side of a door, and may require a key or keypad on either one or both sides.

A surface bolt lock is frequently used in exterior applications where a door or gate is secured on one side. The lock bolt mechanism is surface mounted to a door and jamb. A spring bolt is a type of surface bolt mechanism that remains in the closed position by a spring except while the bolt is being pulled out. Padlocks and locking header bolts are sometimes used for security.
