I have submitted warranty on this safe. If this issue is resolved I will update this review.
My save was never covered under warranty. After talking on the phone with support basically I was told I need to practice how to approach the safe. Sure the safe would unlock fairly easily after I re-programmed it, but after about a week I struggled opening it with a fingerprint.
Several months down the road now and the unlock mechanism no longer works with the thumb print even though it beeps saying it was a good scan. This is the most disappointing product I have purchased from amazon in years.
The safe is very well designed and constructed. It would be difficult to break into and in my mind, is probably the higgest quality of its kind.
When I received the unit and programmed it, it seemed to be working. I continued testing it and began to notice that it was tempermental. Sometimes it would open for me on the first try and sometimes only after a few tries. I also programmed my wife's prints and she seemed to have worse luck with it than I did. It goes without saying that given the intended use, it really isn't the right fit if it cannot be depended on to open the first time.
Near the end of my 30 day trial period, I contacted the company and told them I thought I might need to return it because I was not getting consistent results. Believe it or not, the other reviewers who said the owner handles customer service issues were right! I spoke with the owner of the company, who had me try several things which did not seem to help and ended up arranging an exchange for me. He said they would test the unit that I had returned and in the meantime I could see if a replacement unit worked any better.
The owner did say that there is a small percentage of the population who, for whatever reason, are incompatible with fingerprint technlogy because their fingerprint is not consistent. He did give the example of people with a burn or a scar; I have neither. He did say that if the new unit performed the same as the old one, it might just be that I am part of the small minority with fingerprints which not compatible with fingerprint technology. He also said that with fingerprint technology, it should either work or it should not; it shouldn't be tempermental. I told him I agreed with him in theory but that this had not been my experience.
My whole experience with the owner's service was highly satisfactory. He was helpful, pleasant, willing to take time to try to work with me to see if we could get it working. He also was willing to give me another thirty day trial period for the replacement safe. The company sent a prepaid return label and covered shipping both ways. This is a great company that still understands the secret of treating customers right.
When I received the new safe, I began testing it and decided it was working better, albeit not perfectly. I did allow the thirty day trial period to end, which I am now regretting. I would say that it opens for me aproximately 60% of the time. 60% does not quite cut it in my estimation. I am not sure what I am going to do with the safe now; I may repurpose it and replace it with a combination safe for the current purpose.
What I can tell you is that if it opened consistently, I would give this product five stars without hesitation.
For those of you in a hurry to read reviews - I HIGHLY recommend this safe. I spent weeks looking at different safes and this one came to the top every time. There's mixed reviews (slightly) but if you follow the directions on setting it up I don't think you'll have a problem.
I spent weeks researching different gun safes and the top three I was deciding between were:
1. LockSAF PBS-001
2. The Gun Box
3. Barska biometric safe
The Gun Box seemed great and a very neat idea but I didn't like the price and the fact that the space inside the safe was so small. Not to mention if the electronics fail there's no key, it's a small hole in the bottom you have to stick a strip of metal through and unlock the mechanism. What's keeping a 5 year old from figuring that out?
Barska Biometric seemed nice and if you're budgeted I would recommend this safe, but I didn't like how many people said the biometric reader was inconsistent and the design seemed a little "cheap" in comparison to the LockSAF.
LockSAF is made really well, has a reliable finger print reader (definitely recommend following the suggestions of using your index fingers) and has a lock that is virtually impossible to pick. The inside is nice with foam padding to protect your guns. I think the home run was the fact that a TON of people said the customer support by the owner was amazing and he was willing to do whatever it took to help you get a reliable product. I timed the safe and from pressing the activation button it opened between 2-3 seconds consistently. I've used my fingers at different angles and it still opens every time. I've even opened it after spending an hour at the jacuzzi with my fingers "pruny" and it still opened every time. It's actually pretty compact. The dimensions make it seem bigger than it really is (my opinion). This doesn't mean it's small on the inside, it still fits a lot. I can fit two hand guns, two extra clips and a couple boxes of ammo.
Really the only negative thing I have to say is that I don't like that the silver cover is plastic. It seems cheap and I feel that if I make one wrong move I'll break the cover that covers the battery. For the price, you'd think LockSAF could get sheet metal or something nicer. Last thing (small thing, but I gotta say something) is that the compartment for the battery is really snug and doesn't allow much room to push the wires in after the battery is in it's slot. Just push them in and it'll be fine, but like I said, I had to critique a couple things
