Unlike many mysteries I've read, LOCKED AWAY strikes a wonderful balance between character development and conflict. Ellie Braintree isn't your typical delicate young victim. From the moment she wakes bound and gagged in a cold, damp cellar, she's actively plotting to save herself. Her intelligence and keen skills of observation make her a worthy opponent for the clever (and seriously unhinged) individual behind her predicament. What Ellie doesn't know is that she has a unique and dedicated champion on her side. DCI Alice Candy relies as much on instinct, dreams, and intuition as she does on forensics and witness statements. One of the best parts of the novel was watching Alice and Ellie unwittingly work together to get Ellie home.
Spicer also does a great job building her villains and sidekicks. They are all muti-dimensional people with complex motives and idiosyncratic moral codes. There's only one participant who actually has a grip on the right and wrong of the situation, though Spicer is too good a writer to allow this clarity to serve him fully. Instead, it's his overly confident actions and miscalculations that lead to some of the best plot twists.
Finally, for romantics such as myself, steadfast Dom's efforts to find the woman he loves ratcheted up my emotional involvement in the story, and the subtle sparks between DCI Candy and her partner Will Brady kept me smiling.
LOCKED AWAY provides an engrossing reading experience and an exciting introduction to a new sleuth. Very much looking forward to DCI Alice Candy's next case.
Locked Away, by Bev Spicer, is a short but enjoyable read, told mainly from the perspective of Ellie, but also delving into the extraordinary mind of Alice Candy. As the tension slowly mounts and the book’s pace gathers speed, we’re treated to a well-written race against time to solve the case and bring the abductors to justice. Ms. Spicer has crafted some wonderful characters for this story, and an entertaining relationship between Alice and her professional partner, DC Will Brady, which I hope has the potential to go further in future books.
For anyone wanting a quick, tense read about abduction and mind games, then I strongly recommend Locked Away.
