Her book deals with her eleven year search for a diagnosis and treatment of a baffling mental illness. Coincidentally, she describes how mentally ill patients are treated differently from those with visible wounds and illnesses, and how lacking in effective care such treatment can be for many.
One positive aspect of her care that stands out is the presence of an extended family, including an amazing grandmother, who were there for her, supporting her in whatever way they could. She also had many caring friends, and eventually she met and married a man she describes as her perfect partner. Sadly, most people with mental illness don’t have this important support system.
The author has done her research into the treatment of mental illnesses, and includes suggestions for changes in treatment at the end of her book.
I wish her and her family the best and hope that the medicine that has given her so much control continues to work well for her. She has lost enough time "locked in."
What I appreciate most about this book is Carolyn’s raw honesty. She doesn’t shy away from exposing the flaws and gaps in the healthcare system, which many veterans will find all too relatable. Her perseverance and eventual breakthrough, thanks to a chance encounter with a doctor over a decade after returning home, is inspiring and offers hope to others facing similar challenges.
However, there were moments where the narrative felt repetitive, and the pacing could have been tighter. Some sections seemed to dwell a bit too long on certain aspects of her struggle, which slightly detracted from the overall impact of the story. That said, the book remains a valuable read for anyone looking to understand the complex and often invisible wounds of war.
Overall, Locked-in is a powerful memoir that shines a light on the difficulties many veterans face and the importance of persistence in seeking help. While not perfect, it’s an important contribution to the conversation around mental health and veteran care. I recommend it to anyone wanting to gain a deeper insight into the battles fought on the home front.
