Locks: Rapunzel Unhinged
by Sarah J. Pepper
What can I say about Locks: Rapunzel Unhinged.....nothing other than...... FINALLY a tattooed, alternative, imperfect heroin who tries to save herself! Sure she's a little to naive for her own good, and she's a bit to trusting but at least she left the tower on her own! This thrilling imagining of the Fairy Tale Rapunzel is everything I've wanted to see happen in a fairy story since I was a teenager. Instead of being a meek girl, dreaming of rescue from her tower imprisonment this Rapunzel is willing to fight. Not just for her freedom but for the freedom of others as well. Of course she has a lot of growing up to do, and learning about herself and how people think but she does so with a strong will and smart mouth. Numerous times while reading this novel I busted out laughing (sometimes in public to looks of confusion and scorn). This is a fresh and enlightening look at fairy tales.Sarah J Pepper yet again has hit it out of the park with this journey into a world where fairy tales meet futuristic urban fantasies.
Who likes fairy tale retellings? You? What about you? Me... Well, I used to think that I wouldn't be able to get into a fairy tale retelling. I've read a few really good ones in the last few years but never thought "Ohhh, a fairy tale retelling! Let me pick that book up!" You know? When I heard Sarah Pepper was going to be writing a Rapunzel spin, I was so excited. I mean, c'mon, have you read her spin on Alice?!?! If you haven't, you MUST go get Death of the Mad Hatter! Loved that book.
Locks was an absolutely brilliant spin on the old fashion tale of Rapunzel! It was fresh, exciting, surprising, and so much fun!
The characters that Sarah created are one of a kind! Yes, even though they spin from the old Rapunzel tale, they're creative, fresh & seriously one of a kind. Rapunzel, AKA Zel - Ahh! That girl's attitude and spunk! Love her!
The plot for this tale took me in a completely unexpected direction. I never expected the directions that the story took. I loved that about this novel! I couldn't put it down and had so many laugh/snort moments, I can't count how many times my husband or whoever happened to be near me in public gave me the "wtf?" look... Ha.
The world building was incredible. Everything was so vivid and detailed just right! I was transported to another dimension! It was so awesome.
Huge 5 Star Novel For Me!
This Rapunzel re-telling was mind blowing until the very last page. I didn't know who was good or who was bad, I just knew the sexual tension inside this book was HOT, HOT, HOT!!!! I enjoyed the new adult writing I got in this book...Sarah knows how to write steamy and I hope for lots more in the future!
Locks was dark and gritty, depressing and tragic, confusing and annoying and freaking delicious as hell! Sarah has a great way of combining the tragedy of scenes with comedic relief just when you need it most.
This book took me a bit to get into but once I did, I was hooked, it consumed my thoughts until I finished it. And of course, even when I wasn't reading it I was dreaming of a sexy mercenary dragging a cold glock down my body.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and can't wait for more fairytale re-tellings by Sarah J Pepper!
The best characters in this novel are Rapunzel and Flynn, in my opinion. I also really loved the portrayal of Prometheus in this story as well. Since the beginning, Rapunzel was honest, brave, sophisticated and not afraid of violence. Her tact and personality are so enigmatic that I couldn't help being drawn to her character. She was fun to read about because her entire persona was that of an innocent girl looking for her freedom in all of the wrong places. Her assassin, Flynn keeps telling her that she is not too smart since he could always find her or the fact that she couldn't figure out why Taryn was in much need of her imprisonment. His demeanor is always a mystery up until the very end of the book, which is stunning!! The author allows the reader to have their own perception of the characters in question as far as what side they are truly on until the finality. I was happy to know that I guessed right, but there were a few times that I thought maybe I was wrong and the author would throw out another plot twist. Prometheus seems to be very powerful; yet, he too has become a part of Taryn's vast collection. All other characters were fascinating and brought many variations of perceptions and depth to the story; however, these three were my favorite.
Overall, I loved this story and congratulate the author on such a well-rounded twisted version of Rapunzel. I recommend this one to anyone who enjoys Fantasy and Paranormal genres. I also rate Locks: Rapunzel Unhinged with five stars since I found it extremely difficult to put it down once I started. The originality and creativity of the novel are astounding and the darkness that surrounds every character is so enticing! The pace was fast, but I really enjoy fast-paced reads since they keep the story flowing. I was able to envision almost every scene and both Rapunzel and Flynn's appearances were in my head with clear and preformed images based solely on description alone. The author's words are so powerful and the passion that is conveyed in her novels continue to amaze me. I absolutely can't wait until her fourth Twisted Fairy Tale Confessions book is released so that I can read it up!!
