To be honest I never expected much out of Loco Love when I picked it up on the video store shelf. The only reason I rented it in the first place was because it starred Laura Harring whom I've been a big fan of ever since I saw Mulholland Drive. I put it into the DVD player and was pleasantly surprised to find that I actually enjoyed the film.
While it does have some glaring problems, most blatantly the fact that it was probably very low budget and it seemed as if the movie had been made for television. The fact is the movie entertained me much more so than most of the romantic comedies being pushed onto the big screen by the studios. If I had a choice I would rent this again before watching Maid In Manhattan or the Wedding Planner again. Both big Hollywood hits.
Loco Love's plot is simply enough. A well to do man gets dumped by his cheating wife who digs the knife deeper by taking his restaurant he manages from him in the divorce. meanwhile his Mexican gardener has just won 62 million in the lottery and is desperate to bring his sister(Laura Harring) up from Mexico. He makes a deal with the man that if he marries his sister so she can get a green card he will buy him a new restaurant. The only problem is his sister is rather tempered and the two instantly clash. It's no surprise that the two actually end up falling in love and the ending is predictable but the way the audience is led to the ending is what makes this film so much fun.
For those of you wanting to see something new that you might have missed without 50 million on advertising I would check out this movie.

Fiery Latina and Uptight WASP Guy pair-ups are so common in romcoms, its seems to be its own subgenre. The best of the bunch is Fools Rush In, though I also liked Maid in Manhattan (though that one has some unfair detractors).

But LOCO LOVE is just dreadful, on every level.

* TELLING, NOT SHOWING.

To the point of false advertising. LOCO LOVE never shows what it claims to be about. It claims to be about a Mexican woman, Catalina (played by Laura Harring), who is such a LATIN SPITFIRE (yes, a stereotype) that men FEAR her!

Her brother Miguel, a Mexican gardener, worries that no man will marry her. Macho Mexican men fear Catalina. American men fear Catalina. They run soon after meeting her. Poor Catalina will never marry!

So after winning the lottery, Miguel bribes his Uptight WASP boss, Donald, to marry Catalina for a few years, long enough for her to become a U.S. citizen. Miguel warns and warns Donald. So much so that Donald dreads Catalina.

When Donald and Catalina finally meet ... NOTHING!

Seriously. I was expecting lots of inter-ethnic, culture-clash, battle-of-the-sexes dark humor. But it's a big NOTHING. We NEVER see Catalina in all her terror. She's curt. She's surly. But that's it. Once -- ONCE -- she throws a shoe at Donald. That's the worst she ever it.

A thrown shoe. Oh horrors!

Yet Catalina keeps TELLING Donald how horrible and impossible she is. Even apologizing for it at times. Donald and Miguel and all their friends and family keep TALKING about what a terror Catalina is. Well, she ISN'T.

"Loco Love" reminds me of "Fools Rush In," the 1997 movie starring Matthew Perry and Salma Hayek, but it is not as well done. The plot and performances are much more in line with the Hallmark movies, so it's entertaining, but not memorable. Therefore, you'll find yourself laughing at some of the characters' antics, but don't expect much character depth or development. It is a good lazy Sunday afternoon type of movie. I hope you like it.

Not agreeing with the whole "get married to get a green card"...but I did love the whole "finding love in places you least expect it" a good movie overall if you are a sucker for a good love story.

It was fun. And the depth of the plot surprised me. The main characters had good chemistry. Sometimes though, the delivery of the lines left me wondering if the film wasn't going to randomly break into a seventies adult movie. I mean, the acting was pretty bad at times. But the way it was so consistently bad makes me wonder if the script was written as they went along, and or if the director wanted it to be bad. Anyway, I liked it, but it was a bit cheesy. Enjoy!

unusually pleasant result from what usually results in divorce racketeering. Far superior to the "war brides" preying on soldiers being sent into foreign wars to be slaughtered to enrich themselves at taxpayer expense without ever being "wives" to the victims.

Unlike some of the other critics, I enjoyed this movie....funny-- and the actors are believable to me---I would watch it again. Laura Harring is talented and beautiful and her male counterpart does a good job too! The brother is handsome and funny...ancianita is a character. Good family fun.

I don't write that many reviews about movies on here, but this is a movie that is very good and does not have all the fluff that Hollywood typically throws in it's romantic comedies. So if you have a special someone in your life and you want to watch a good romantic comedy I'd watch this one. Granted the movie is not perfect; although it is just the right amount to keep you entertained for an hour and a half.
