Dangerous!

I have been using cast iron my whole life and have 2 Lodge pieces, a skillet and griddle. Both have a slight curve or bow to the handle...I assume Lodge did this to make it easier to hold than the standard flat handle. I’ve always used a potholder or towel which have worked fine but thought I’d give these a try. BIG mistake! If you store your cast iron properly by lightly oiling after using, then you can imagine what happens when warm oil meets a loose fitting silicone holder...DANGEROUSLY slippery. After frying bacon, I tried to remove the skillet from the stove and skillet handle slipped right out of the silicone holder. Luckily, I was over the sink when it happened but had I not been, it could have resulted in serious burns. Would NOT recommend!

When I see 3,338 5 star reviews out of approximately 6,000 and less than 500 1 star, I had to check. The major complaint was that the handle got hot and or melted. I have used this since April and have never had a hot handle. In fact I just ordered a mini handle cover for my 8” pan. I tried testing my 10” pan on high heat of a recent model electric range. I heated the pan for ten minutes on high heat with the silicone handle cover on since high heat cooking is generally fairly quick. The handle did not get hot. What did get hot was the assist handle even though I had the cover there also. That was because I did not make sure to center the pan on the burner and part of the assist handle was directly over the burner. If you use the correct size burner for your pan the handles should be off to the side of the burner. If you put a pan on too large a burner the handles will be directly over the burner which is definitely over the 450° temp that it is supposed to protect against. Even without the silicone cover it takes a while for the pan handle to get hot IF one uses the correct size burner.

The handle provides poor heat protection and started to degrade after only a few uses. It offers a weak grip at best on the larger pans and is utterly useless on the small models. I have two and they serve no real purpose other than to add more red accents to my kitchen decor.

Yesterday I was cooking a thin skirt steak. I needed my Lodge skillet to be as hot as possible to get a great sear quickly. I was using the Lodge skillet silicone handle cover for the first time. It fit my 12" Lodge skillet pretty well. I heated up the pan and cooked. When I went to grab the handle it was HOT. I got a slight burn despite the handle cover. Also, I later noticed that the underside of the silicone had singed and melted. Since then I have read more of the reviews with others experiencing the same issues. I wish I had read these before cooking. I believe this handle cover should come with a warning not to leave it on while cooking at all. One of the best things about cooking with cast iron is that you can get it to such high temperatures, and for this to be sold without a warning about this seems irresponsible. Perhaps it would be useful to slip on to briefly carry the pan? But, if I can't keep it on the pan, I will just go back to using my heavy duty oven mitts for that.

In the description it says this handle holder will fit Lodge Keyhole handle skillets 9 inch in diameter and up. I bought a 12 inch Lodge Cast Iron Pre-Seasoned Skillet from Target on sale and while it does fit, it does not fit as I had hoped. There's about an inch of space left at the tip (you can see me pinching the excess space in my photo) and when you lift the pan using the silicone holder, it shifts, not a ton, but enough to make you feel slightly unsure of your grip on the pan - that's with it empty. If you're just using it to grab the pan to shift around on your stove top, I don't see anything I just mentioned being an issue. I was expecting more of a perfect fit being made by the same folks that made the pan, but wasn't the case - it was what made me go with the Lodge brand for silicone handle holders.

Originally I was satisfied with this product due to how cheap it was. But after burning myself badly due to how loose the fit is, i would recommend sticking with a full glove. The silicone handle texture on the inside does not do a good job providing acquitted grip of cast iron and is very sensitive to temperature, burning on the bottom. The grip fits loosely which becomes a danger when attempting to pour out grease. I would steer clear of this cheap product as It has already cost me more in medical bills. Go with a full silicone glove that fits your hand properly

Potentially dangerous

I've owned this (in black) for several months. It's simply too large and not heat resistant enough. That it's too large is potentially dangerous as the skillet can/will twist inside the holder causing a spill and since lots of use this with heated oil inside... well you can see the problem. I'd look elsewhere or simply use a dish towel wrapped around the handle when the skillet needs to be lifted/moved. Until I find one that works, I keep this on the skillet just to protect from burns but I don't use it to move the skillet.

I cook with cast iron more and more, love those pans but of course the handles get very hot and you need something to put on them to allow you to handle the pans. When I say "cook" I mean I throw stuff I find on the skillet and flip it a few times add salt and voila dinner is done.

In an effort to avoid chemicals found in all nonstick pans which are really bad for you, I purchased an Iron skillet (which I really like) and this was recommended in the frequently bought together section, its has proven to be a lousy suggestion. Amazon should "recommend" a first aid kit and general burn medicines with this product.

This silicone handle cover does not itself melt, it does fit most handles, but it also does not provide enough insulation to prevent you from getting burnt especially if you grab the pan handle with a strong grip and if you own cast iron cookware, you'll understand the weight of these things and how anything but a strong grip can work. The more you squeeze the red thing the more searing heat and resulting pain comes through.

I will look around for something else but for now I use this and a dish towel to grab the pan, which defeats the whole purpose.

Don't believe the "fits any Lodge pan" part, as it doesn't. I wish I'd read the reviews rather than trust that a brand could make something that fits its' own pans. It's loose, "squeezy" thanks to all the spare space, and I wouldn't recommend any high energy cooking or pancake flipping. Even lifting the pan a centimetre off the stove makes you hold your breath. Doesn't feel safe at all.

Overpriced, and limited effectiveness

I’m a little surprised by how disappointed I was in this silicone handle holder. I don’t know if Lodge actually make this or its just badge marketing, but for what it is, it’s overpriced and, worse, not that effective in use.

It does fit the handle of my 9” Lodge skillet, but it’s relatively slack and does not feel secure. This might not matter much if you’re only moving the pan from one place to another, but it’s when you try to manoeuvre the pan in some way that you notice the weakness.

If, for example, you want to drain contents from the pan via one of the pouring lips, you’ll find the holder rotates around the handle as you tip the pan, meaning you have to grip it tightly to stop it slipping. Same thing if you’re giving the pan contents a ‘shake’ to distribute evenly. For these, I found myself reverting to using a simple kitchen cloth and immediately everything felt more secure and less likely to slip.

I returned it.

I don't usually write reviews, but this product was so dreadful I thought it unfair on other potential customers not to warn them of how utterly useless this product is. It doesn't fit the handle - it's too big and flaps off the end of my Lodge 20" skillet (which incidentally is a great product I would highly recommend). What is worse is that it doesn't do it's job and it gets hot if used for any length of time. It is simply not worth buying as you'd be better off with an oven glove or even a tea towel. Very disappointed.

I bought this for the Lodge 10.5 inch pre-seasoned cast iron square grill pan as I thought it would be a good buy for it as it's from the same manufacturer. It is not a good product, the silicon holder does not fit well, it slips very easily even though there are "gripping" strips inside the handle. I tried it a few times but it slipped every time so in the end I binned it and used a rolled up tea-towel - which in an odd way was so much cooler!! (pardon the pun). If you are looking at the Lodge grill pan/brush/holder, buy the first two - they are superb, just leave this.

The pans from Lodge are really, really good - I actually bought two.

So why on earth have their product development department allowed these handle holders!

They aren't fitting very well being too loose, they look cheap and most important - they can't isolate the heat from an ordinary plate while frying eggs. The product description states they "resist heat". This is obviously not the same as "providing proper insulation".
