*update. I'm bumping these up from 3 stars to 4 stars because in comparison to craft store sticks these are much better quality, and have more usable sticks.
These craft sticks are wonderful for all sorts of projects! I'm using them to build a miniature house, framing and all, so have gone through a couple of boxes so far. A lot of these sticks are bent, gouged, and otherwise unusable for any application requiring relatively straight sticks. If I had to guess I would say at least a few hundred of them have been bent, and at least 75-100 very brittle so when you cut them they just fall apart.
They take paint and stain very well, as well as hot glue. I use a high temp gun and have never had a problem with the sticks falling or peeling off. In fact there's been a few times I messed up the siding and shingles and needed a small knife to pry them back off! The miniature house (which is a tall 2 story with full roof) has a bit of heft to it and the craft sticks have no problem bearing some weight with proper supports. Other materials adhere well to them as well including wood, plastic, and Lexan (which I'm using for windows). Hot glue will not stay adhered to surfaces that hold temperatures such as stone and glass, not that most people would need it to anyway, so I'd suggest another glue but that's a topic for another review.
Overall, great craft sticks. Perfect for any kid crafts and great even for adults' crafts. A great way to get your imagination flowing. The 1000 piece pack is great because you basically have an unlimited supply to play with and any pieces you don't use, or clippings, can be mixed in with the garden because these are 100% all natural wood.
