I'd like to give this product a higher rating, since once you fix the problem described below, it is a good value. Compared to other mat cutters, it is affordably priced and is capable of producing well-cut mats. Unfortunately, one component that probably cost the manufacturer less than a dollar downgraded my rating. The cutter uses a length of rubber o-ring cord that fits into a groove machined into the underside of the long hold-down bar to avoid indents in the surface of mats inserted under the bar during the cutting process. The concept is good, but implementation went awry. The o-ring cord is made of a black elastomer that left indelible stains on the mat surface. After ruining the first two sheets that I cut, I removed the four screw that attach the bar to the base and pulled out the o-ring cord. Wiping it with a paper towel at first, and next with a microfiber cloth did not remove the black surface residue on the cord. Neither did washing it in warm water and mild detergent. The elastomer had degraded, probably because of age or exposure to light or chemicals. I tossed it and reassembled the bar, but applying pressure to hold down the mats being cut left faint indentations. I finally substituted some fresh 3/32" food grade (white) viton o-ring cord and it now works fine. Users should not have to do this to get the device to work; Logan needs to make the cheap upgrade. In any case, I am giving the product a 3 star rating and recommend that buyers insert and slide around some scrap pieces of mat board to check for this problem. Good luck.

Precut mattes are expensive and if you go to a framing store for a custom matte, the prices are even more outrageous. Purchasing whole sheets for $10 - 15 and cutting your own mattes will pay for itself and this matte cutter is really easy to use. If you do a lot of mattes, there are online wholesalers, which really bring the cost down, but there is usually a minimum order number.

This cutter has a straight blade to cut the outer edge of the matte to fit the frame and then a 45 degree angled blade to cut the inner beveled edge. The hardest part is measuring where to cut. After that, you just line up the matte and run the blade along the track. I have used this cutter for close to 100 mattes and the blades are still sharp enough. They show some wear, but I haven't had to replace them yet.

The only caveat is that the beveled blade is only long enough to cut through 4 ply stock (about 1/16 inch). This is the standard matte thickness so it's not a big deal, but some frames come with precut 6 or 8 ply mattes and this cutter can't be used to make the openings bigger.

I've cut a number of mats now with this tool and find it precise, easy to use and economical for its cost. The bevel cuts are indeed precise and, with careful use, come out professional-looking. The bevel cutter itself guides along the unit and doesn't take much strength to push along the bevel, and there's a very well-calibrated parallel ruler that holds the mat in place for the bevel cuts. (One caveat: you probably should stick to 2-ply mats, although it's possible to get a layered look by doubled mats, the wider one outside the inner one). The unit also comes with a knife for cutting larger mat sheets (which usually come 32x40" and fit in the cutter, which the knife uses as a guide).

While you can get precut bevel mats at art stores, I use a Canon PRO-10 photo printer, I do my own digital photography, so I find that the printed photos are usually sizes that the precut mats don't match, so I need a tool like this, both for bevels that fit the pictures and mats cut to fit the art-store frames. A professional-looking bevel-cut mat goes with exhibit-quality prints, and I'm getting that with this cutter.

The unit ships with extra blades and a DVD that includes very helpful instructional videos, though the videos are also on the Logan website along with more material. Calculating the size of bevel cuts is tricky and Logan well-demonstrates how to measure and calculate the cuts.

Logan does sell more elaborate cutters, but for me, someone who does this as a hobby, this particular product is a very good value for the money, saves considerable money in precut art supplies or custom framing, and very well-suited for what I do. Strongly recommend, esp. for hobby photographers or framers.

This cutter is excellent in my opinion. It's very portable and cuts perfectly. All my corners are crisp and sharp. I wish I had purchased this earlier.

I bought this because I wanted to do an array of reprinted 12x18 prints in 16x20 frames for my media room. I have right now 36 prints ready to go. Believe me, it was going to be EXPENSIVE to even just straight buy the mats I wanted. So I spent the money on this, and another $65 for the 16x20 mats and gave it a go. Can't say it was fast because I wanted it precise. Can say it was accurate, easy to install, easy to set up and took a single mat of playing to get professional results. It was pretty darn impressive. I've wanted a mat cutter for a few years but it wasn't until I bought a house that I decided it was time. Media room first, then go from there. I asked for a quote. I was quoted on a bulk order $40 per mat parts and labor. $1440 plus the price of frames. $160 for this and a surplus of mats for the same quality cuts. Totally worth it.

Precise cuts, accurate cuts, just follow the directions and you will LOVE IT. I know I do. I'm so stoked to have this for decorating the entire house. It doesn't have to be expensive it just has to look deliberate.
