Installation
As for the installation, it was very easy. The connection were very simple. Connect the HDMI cable from your set top box output to the input HDMI of the Revue and the HDMI output to the HDMI input of your television. I used a wired Ethernet connection and had to plug an Ethernet cable into the Revue. That was it. I ran into one glitch, but it turned out to be a problem my router was having (other devices on my network were having connection issues too). The step by step on screen instructions were simple and easy to follow. If you wanted details of the step you were performing, help was only a click away.
Product Quality
The Logitech Revue is a very sharp looking device. I wish they had gone with a matte finish instead of the glossy piano black finish because of fingerprints. The design is elegant and functional.
Picture quality
The picture quality was no different from what I normally get from Roku player or XBox 360 Netflix player. To those people who complained about picture quality, I have noticed with both my Roku player and XBox 360 that picture quality varies. It has more to do with the quality of your Internet connection at that time than the device.
Services
Currently there is the requisite Netflix and Amazon On Demand. The Netflix player is functional. It allows you to see your instant queue. This is similar to the XBox 360 Netflix application when it first came out. I would imagine that Netflix or Google will update this with software updates to allow you more control over Netflix. The Amazon on Demand is basically just a browser link and not a separate application. I watched Iron Man 2 and it played beautifully. Again, I would imagine that Amazon or Google will create legitimate application. I also looked at Crackle and CNET. They both played back wonderfully. Crackle is a cool and free service. It inserts a single commercial every 12 minutes. This is a fixed time so sometimes it breaks for commercial in the middle of a sentence.
General Perceptions
I really think the power of Google TV is the integration of the television and the web. The ability to run a search on your television is awesome while watching the your program. In the past, you would have to go to your computer to do this. Now you can do it all on one device. I love this integrated approach with the device. In the past, you would have to used your TV remote to switch the video source and then with another remote operate your device (i.e. XBox 360). Having everything integrated together is the true key to this device. Also, integrating your separate devices into one is great. It is a bit different getting used to using a keyboard, but being able to control my television, my set top box, and my A/V receiver with one device was outstanding. The one thing I wish the keyboard would do is recognize a double click on the touch pad as a left mouse click like it does on notebook and netbook computers. Also, I downloaded the Logitech Harmony Android app and it works very well too. I was impressed at the integration of this app with the device.
I am not sure what people were expecting from this device. Could it be more? Yes, but it has that capability. After all, it is basically a computer. With time, more services and apps will be added. Does that stop you from getting more today? No, whatever you can do from the Chrome browser on your computer, you can do with Google TV. If all you were looking for was a streaming device, then you should get a Roku player which is a great device for what it was meant to do and cheaper. If you are looking for something more, get Google TV. It is basically a computer integrated with your television. I found it clever that the Revue uses the same video source your set top box. This allows Google TV to hijack your television signal and integrate with it. Other devices use a separate video source which requires you to switch the source to use it.
I love Google TV for what it can do. I can't browse my e-mail with my Roku player, but I can with Google TV. I can't do an internet search with my Roku player, but I can with Google TV. I can't do an integrated search of my television guide and the Internet from my computer, but I can with Google TV.
I had a friend mine at my house who is not tech savvy. When I showed her how this device worked, she said she would never get off the couch if she had one of these. I thought this was a real testimony for this device.
The keyboard is amazing. It feels very light. The mousepad in the upper right-hand corner is cool. You can enable a touch-to-click mode on it too. In the upper left hand corner is a left-click button too so you can hold it like a controller. By the spacebar there is a search key which you will be using the most.
You can type in ANYTHING. Type in Pandora and you can open the app from there. Type in a show you're looking for and Pandora will give you different ways you can watch it.(some ways will disappoint you) Pandora is very nice on your tv, also for a music video channel, VEVO is amazing.
Another plus is the PIP(Picture-in-Picture) You can watch anything on your cable in the bottom right hand corner in hd if available while you surf the web on your tv. Surfing facebook or yahoo or whatever you want.
The internet isn't bad on here. Sometimes it lags and may take a while but most of the time it's pretty smooth. I have it hooked directly in from my router. I don't know how it runs through wi-fi though.
The major and only problem with the Revue I see if the content on here. Yes, there's plenty of stuff to watch...for the right price lol. The major networks is blocked(ABC,NBC,FOX, CBS) If the revue will survive it's gonna have to have these available. The big complaint is people are saying they would rather plug their laptop into their tv to get the networks to work. Yeah, i'd rather NOT do that. If you're laptop has HDMI out and you have a cable that long, well that's the only way I would recommend that. If you DON'T have netflix or amazon VOD, this does not warrant $99 bucks even. It integrates everything well, but if you're looking to ditch cable, well you're gonna have to wait lol.
I think in September it will have the highly anticipated Honeycomb update and an app store. When this hits, it'll probably be a must-buy. Is it revolutionary?....nope, Can it be...? I'll tell you this Revue has SOOOO much potential it'll give you headaches, but it's not there just yet.
Reasons to buy...
PROS:
Netflix
Amazon VOD
PIP(Picture-In-Picture)
Keyboard controls tv, a/v receiver, cable.
HBO GO(if you have subscription it's real nice)
MLB TV
VEVO(music video channels)
EPixHD(if you have a subscription to this...this is a must-have and potential game-changer)
Crackle(free movies and tv shows)
Youtube(also real nice)
Cons:
No Major networks...!
AMazon VOD selection...
Browser could be better
Box has no power button on it(i usually unplug at night)
That's basically it, it also has a "What's on" feature that is really nice too, displaying movies and sports and all kinds of different highlighted events on tv that you may be interested in. I would say if you don't have netflix, wait til app store update. It can do a lot more things like streaming from pc too. If you love music, I would definitely say get this. $100 bucks isn't too bad, but there's some unanswered questions about this box.
Top reviews from other countries
First of all its clear that quite a few people have written their review based on ill thought out niggles and problems that are unfair to google tv.
I got this product as a xmas gift for a friend and can say that its a excellent little gadget if you look at what its good at.
It allows you to visit any site on the web, email friends, chat with friends, watch films/tv shows, listen to hundreds of radio stations, shop till you cant shop anymore and many many more things you care to mention.
Now people have complained its a useless product given they have a laptop/pc hooked up to their tv already and can do all the above plus they have sky or virgin and can watch what they please.
Now i dont know about most people but to hook up a pc or laptop to a tv is rather expensive and you already have a device that lets you do the above activities so why are you complaining about google tv if you have the above, pointless complaining.
To do all the above would cost you easily £500 plus were as google tv can be purchased for as little as £80.
Secondly with google tv being released this year in the uk, 2012, you will get all the uk content you wish for.
This was never meant to compete with £500 plus pcs or sky/virgin subscriptions, again £40 plus a month to watch football.
Then again we come to the playstation 3/xbox 360 which i have also, yes they both have some of the content mentioned but again you need the machines, £120 upwards and a yearly subscription, pointless argument.
To put it clearly and in a sensible review, google tv is a very good product that lets you do alot of things you only dreamed of on your tv just wearing you socks and pants in the privacy of your home.
Im very happy with the product and so are my friends and have had countless fun shopping, playing games with the kids and learning things they never knew before.
If your after a cheap versatile way to get on the web then i highly recommend google tv.
