This headset was about double the price of the Microsoft offering. It seems to provide excellent vocal clarity, a must for voice recognition. I also tested it with Skype, and likewise, the vocal clarity is great. I did not use it for music or video gaming (it has a three way slide switch allowing one to choose between phone/voice apps, gaming, and music, apparently changing equalization - treble, bass, in different ways.)
Some have complained about the comfort aspect, and I would guess that one's head size would have an impact on this. I did find some pinching of my ears, so to speak, probably augmented by the fact that I wear eyeglasses, but it wasn't so bad that I can't adapt. I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars only because of this comfort aspect.
The one suggestion I have for this is to build your own windscreen to cut out the 'popping' of your voice with hard consonants, such as "K" or "P", etc. I took a piece of soft shipping foam used to pack hard disk drives for shipment, and cut a rectangle which I slipped over the microphone. Works perfectly - no voice 'pops' (see video). I have a large head, and this headset is comfortable, and the earphones cover my ears and are padded, I can wear them for 1 and 2 hour flights without problems. Build quality is great for this price level. Beat my expectations, and I'm betting will easily meet yours too.
You can silence the microphone by pressing in on the right earpiece, press once more to turn the mic back on. This unit has been in heavy use for nearly two years now, and I could not be more satisfied. I like it so well I have recommended to many other simulation pilots, I would endorse it for other game-play as well. For the modest price, you will NOT be unhappy with this purchase! You hear my voice as the pilot talking to Air Traffic Control on my way from San Diego to Las Vegas.
Besides games, I think this unit is stellar for other voice applications that require high-quality rendition (Skype, Recording Training Videos, etc)
These phones are just one of those items you hit on, go with, use forever. I'm kind of a fan of Logitech stuff anyway.
This is a good, but not great, headset. I can't see how an USB headset could be great, so this may be the best one out there.
My experiences in brief are :
-- The headset is designed for someone with a square head. Open the box, hold it in front of your face, and you will see its bewilderingly polygonal design. Sure, it mimics an arc, but it is SQUARE. Now, I realize these are made in China, but I have met many, many Chinese and have yet to note a square head. Therefore I must assume the US engineer who designed these suffers from acute cranial angularism. If your head is not square, this headset might help you achieve the ever-elusive flat-top.
-- Sounds great..unless you do anything processor intensive. For example, opening photoshop, running flash player, etc. Then one hears the occasional sound lag, hiss, or pop. When I say it sounds great, I mean it. Very clear with almost no noise. The mic works very well in a crowded room with lots of inconsiderate rubes, nincompoops, and common loudmouths. Same for the inadequately padded earphones. Which leads to...
--Inadequately or inappropriately padded earphones. Padding is the same stuff that is used to prevent a Saturn V booster from scraping up the gantry as it lifts into orbit. Very sturdy, hard as a saddle.
--Skype friendly. This is the main reason I bought these. My "limited" work computer has no mic input. I guess they used the money to buy an MBA a bonus. This USB set solved the problem. The mic is, as far as I can tell, flawless. VERY clear. I never repeat myself in conversation with my aging father. Oh, and I can hear him, too.
-- Volume control right on the earpiece. Perfect!
-- Switch from Music mode to voice mode. If you are playing music, say Grooveshark, the music will play from your speakers whilst you chitter and chatter and listen to your friends LOL (and govoreet and smeck) away through the headset. Switch back to music mode, and the music plays through the headset again.
In the end the pros outweigh the cons. This headset is nothing but a headset, but has all the features that a headset needs. I recommend it.
