Top customer reviews
I'm holding back the 5th star because they refuse to release a Linux app for programming. There is a way to do it via the website and then flashing it to the remote with a 3rd party program, but Logitech should make a proper application.
If you are not familiar with the Logitech remotes, they are great. There is a program you load on your computer, then you enter the items you have by manufacturer and model number. This takes a little time but it is well worth it. You then setup " Events" like "Watch TV" by answering questions like "Do you change channels with your TV or cable box" and "Do you control the volume with your sound bar or TV". Then you plug the remote in and it programs the Events to it. Different events can be " Watch TV", "Watch a DVD" or "Play a Game". Then when you hit the " Watch TV" button, the remote will turn on your TV, cable box, surround system and what any other devices needed, and set everything to the correct input or output setting needed. If then you hit the "Watch a DVD", it will leave the TV on, but turn off the cable box and turn on the DVD player.
Logitech definitely makes the best Universal remote out there, but like I said, unfortunately they are no longer making this unit with the recharging station. You can still buy one that is rechargeable by plugging in a power cable, or a newer model that has a charging station and is almost all touch screen. I bought one of those though and had problems with the touch screen being exceptionally temperamental, so I took it back and bought another one of these.
The battery compartment tends to break with regular use (and occasional dropping) requiring tape, at some point, to keep it closed (there are small tabs on the back that also break off if you open/close it too often) and the batteries tend to swell with time, regular use and charging, busting out of the compartments. (Replacement batteries can be purchased.)
A far smaller, but still annoying, gripe is that none of the three ever can consistently keep the correct time displayed (which would be a useful feature) and the time can't be easily reset because of a glitch on the remote that allows only AM options to display under the "system options" key. So, the only way to set the time/date accurately is via hooking it up to USB and updating the remote ... Not something you wanna do all that often. And the time set rarely lasts more than a week anyway.
But, despite those flaws, for ease of use, I haven't found anything better and easier to program for the complicated set-up I've got going on. If I did, I would have switched, but so far the Harmony 880, despite its flaws, is the best thing going in this price point and one button start of all our components is now something we can't (well, don't want to anyway) live without.
It's also not hard to modify and tweak given a touch of tech savvy and a bit of patience. And, since you might end up replacing it, it's also nice that you can use the same online profile you created to get a new (replacement) remote up and running in minutes with the same complicated set-up you've already slaved over.
Every component I've used has been in the extensive Logitech database and it also handles complicated programming (different remote settings, for instance, for two of the same components). It's possible to set up pretty much anything that can be controlled via remote with this baby, no matter how esoteric your function.
