I also believe that Logitech themselves haven’t released the proper drivers for this device but I am not the only one experiencing the same problem.
Upon starting blogging again I knew I needed to upgrade the camera I currently had if I wanted to do live broadcasts, or start doing some video reviews of things. In hindsight, when it comes to doing video reviews an actual camcorder or DLSR would be a better choice, but as those can cost into the hundreds if not thousands, for what I wanted it for, a new good quality webcam should do the job. I’ve also recently secured a new position at my place of work, so now that I’m generally stuck in a room with one other person, communicating with others around the business requires Skype for Business, there’s also the opportunity to work from home.
So it seemed like I had all the excuses I needed to make yet another tech purchase.
Happy with my Logitech Quickcam Pro 9000 which was now getting on for about 10 years old and still throwing me out in glorious 720p HD over Skype it seemed a no brainer to stick with Logitech. I’m all for cheap tech if you can find the tool that does the job and doesn’t look like it’s going break down on you within a month, or is just something to dip your toes into that world before deciding on a better product, but for the content I ‘may’ want to throw out there it seemed like sticking with one of the best manufacturers out there was the best idea.
The HD Pro Webcam C920 by Logitech has been the webcam of choice now for bloggers, skype & Twitch users for almost 5 years. Knocking reviews out of the park with it’s clear 1080p HD video and clear stereo audio. On many sites it is still to this day the recommended camera to buy, some 5 years after release. But, what’s this. Logitech gave it an upgrade in the past 12 months. The C922 Pro Stream webcam, with background replacement technology and even comes with a little desk tripod. Perfect for idiots like me!
So did the best get better, or did Logitech take a backwards step?
I guess in reality, I’m not qualified to answer that question, after all, I never owned the C920, so I can’t give a like for like comparison.
What I can say however is, that for the price difference, it seems a no brainer to buy the newer tech, It’s about £15 more than the older version, so why on earth would you try and save £15 on tech that’s over 5 years old.
On paper, and visually there’s not a lot of difference between them. The C922 does however offer 720p video at 60fps. The design is also very similar, so unlike other tech companies, it was good to see Logitech stick to the ‘if it isn’t broke, it doesn’t need fixing’ rule.
Both come with tripod mounts, something many many webcams are missing in this digital age, and it’s a massive trick to be missing, so it’s no wonder Logitech come out trumps for so many users of Skype and Twitch.
Also like the C920, both sides of the camera have forward facing microphones, which as far as communicating over the Internet goes, will serve you well. If you’re looking to do high quality tutorial videos however, you might want to look at adding an external microphone. Sound quality for me, will always trump the quality of the video.
The USB lead comes in at a good length also, 6 foot, so even if you’re attaching this to a tower desktop system that’s sat on the floor, you shouldn’t need to go out and find yourself a USB extension lead, seems on the design front, Logitech have thought of everything.
Video quality is fantastic, which I guess shouldn’t come as a surprise either knowing that the C920 has been out performing newer models for over 5 years, you’ll look super sharp to your buddies, so make sure you’ve popped your spots or applied your makeup first! 😉
So at this point you might be thinking, hold on, you told me to spend an extra £15 on this new bit of kit, but from the sounds of it, it’s not really that much different from the old model, save a lick of paint here and an updated logo there.
Personally, I think the desk standing tripod alone, at least adds £5-£10 to the value of the newer package.
What about the other £5.
Well that comes with the software, and that’s really where users of Twitch for example have been catered for allowing you to replace or remove your background entirely, leaving just you as if you’re in front of a green screen.
It’s all virtual, the software, provided by Personify, will aim to detect your head and shoulders and remove everything else around it. Or, if you prefer, you’re able to easily add in a replacement background instead. When it works. When I say when it works, it’s because it’s quite hit and miss, Ideally you still need a very blank background behind you, or it just get’s really confused. It also needs a bit of welly. Odds are if you’re using your PC for gaming anyway, you’ll have the processor the handle it.
If you’re after a new webcam, and have around £100 budget for a new one, then I can’t recommend it enough
I purchased the C922 Pro Stream webcam to replace my ageing Logitech QuickCam Pro 9000. As a Microsoft Teams user, I was disappointed to learn that this application's recent built-in feature of blurring the background in a call simply does not work on older, Windows computers whose chipsets do not run the AVX Instruction Set. The C922 Pro Stream Webcam was cited on Amazon's pages as being capable of blurring the background without having to upgrade your PC. It took quite some time to find out how to do this.
To adjust settings on the webcam, you have to download the Logi Capture application from the Logitech site. This does have a greeen screen facility but you also need a green screen behind you and I frankly could have done this myself at less cost than replacing the webcam! Also in the box comes a 3-month trial voucher for XSplit, software which does quite a bit of fancy stuff including background removal but as I am never likely to stream videos or gameplay, this isn't worth the hassle.
Eventually, I discovered that you can install Personify's 'ChromaCam' and use this for free, (links from the Logitech website under the description for this webcam model). Background removal works a treat and there are a few options for changing the background that might better suit you. Upgrading to the pro version allows you to replace the background with any image, amongst other benefits.
To use the background removal tool in Microsoft Teams, (and presumably other video chat applications), you must ensure that you select 'ChromaCam' as the camera device and you are good to go.
If you don't need 720p at 60fps you can find other Logitech webcams that still output 1080p for cheaper like the C920 which is usually on sale.
Update: I have come to the realisation that when you try the 'new' 720p 60 fps mode on this webcam the quality will diminish very noticeably. I could understand a slightly darker image or even worse image but the 720p 60 fps looks more like 480p 60 fps stretched to 720p. If it says it does 720p at both 30 and 60 fps there shouldn't be such a large quality drop. It's almost as if they just did a software update to the C920 with no change in the hardware to make the 60 fps actually 720p.
I have tried multiple apps including the popular streaming apps OBS and X-Split they get the same diminished image quality from this webcam when attempting frame rates above 40.
I have returned this webcam.
I watched a lot of Youtube videos on how to get the best out of it and I recommend that purchasers who are new to this do the same. Getting the settings correct and using good lighting makes a huge difference.
There is a bit of a confusion with the advertised specs.. At 1080p the image is crisp, but the camera will only supposedly at 30fps at that setting. At 720p 60fps supposedly can be used, but I find I can get 1080 with 50fps with the Logitech software and 1080 with 60fps with OBS. Good lighting is needed to use these settings. The results were tested with Media Info to make sure the resulting videos were not mis-reporting their spec.
The autofocus tends to hunt a bit from time to time and so many people turn it off if they are simply recording themselves sitting in a desk chair.
Software-wise the Logitech software is very good. It has a lot of settings, more that a lot of third party applications and these allow the camera to be tweaked sufficiently to get a really good image. The long list of third party camera applications I tried produced a much poorer images. The exception is OBS which produces a good image too. X-split video was good enough for streaming.
The one down side of Logitech's software is the sound quality. One Youtube tester reported it as being 92 bit. Really quite poor and recording on OBS the improvement was marked. However in installing and uninstalling third party recording apps. I seem to have picked up a codec or two and now get 198kb/s at 48 Hz AAC - Good enough! (Measured in Media Area).
The microphones compare very well with my high end Senheisser headset, quite a surprise. They do not give much background noise at all.
The free tripod is not so good - mine went for recycling. However the camera to monitor mount is superb and it allows for some tilting too.
Overall I am pleased with this camera and can recommend it.
Logitech really need to do more with sound settings and codecs.
Lastly quite a few Youtube reviewers go on about the Logitech software not remembering the last used settings. This seems to have been fixed.
I’m not going to give you all the high-tech specs, etc.
All the specs are on the description so me telling you everything again would not really help.
What I can say is that although I nearly bought the Amazon one, as my intention was to simply buy a camera to do video reviews with... I ended up buying this model which is better. Why? Because the price difference was so small and because a fellow customer recommended this one over the Amazon model on the questions and answers. At the moment I have only used it for video reviews, but in future I might use it for other things. The better image quality on this model versus the little difference in price makes it worth it!
Right now, I am only using custom frame sizes and frames per second required for an Amazon video. In case it helps anyone, Amazon videos need to be 30 fps. It is recommended that the frame size is 480×270 . Maintaining and 16:9 ratio.
If you would like to see any of the quality of the videos, you’re very welcome to check out any of my reviews on my Amazon profile. I haven’t uploaded one here, to avoid favouritism.
All I can say is that this camera is super easy to use!
Plug it into your computer and find a place to put it on.
The Logitech software will download the first time you broke your camera Irene. From then on, when you need it, simply search Logitech from your search bar and start using.
The software is so easy even a child could work it all out.
Obviously this camera is good for streaming as well as recording. There is even an option where you can record whilst having a computer screen on. This is probably what I most like about this camera, that I have possibilities for future uses. Specially thanks to that little tripod that came with it and an extension cable of 3 m that I also purchased. At the moment it’s helping me to do my video reviews with the requirements needed without having to filter or modify anything through any other software. Saving me time and hassle 😊
But in future... I’m sure I’ll find it many other uses.
Extremely easy to use
Comes with mini desk tripod
Good picture quality
Straight forward, free and easy to use Logitech software
Start using straight out of the box
What would I improve?
I have noticed that if I use the zoom, the picture quality decreases enormously. Even if I only use a little zoom.
I would also like the WebCam to come with some sort of “peg” to be able to attach it easier to places.
I have added a picture for you to see how right now it’s on a picture frame, just above my desk. I’m still 🤞🏼hoping it’s not going to fall, as the above the screen mechanism it has is too wide for my surface screen and is not good for me to do my video reviews anyway.
This is a great piece of kit for its price.
Would I buy again?
I would, but I hope I don’t have to! (Stay put on the frame pls)
Would I recommend?
Years ago, I used to do video reviews with my DSLR. Although the video quality was a lot better, when it focused correctly (let’s not forget my Nikon camera was made for photographs not videos). I had to prepare camera and tripod, record, remove the memory card, remove the little memory card from inside the card’s larger adapter of the camera, introduce the memory card in my laptop, copy the file onto my laptop, pass the file through a software to adjust the permitted parameters and then use the file... 😩😫😖
Yes, you can imagine...
Now, I open the software, record and upload the file on amazon and social media. Done! 😁🥳🥳🥳
It has made my life easier and it hasn’t broken my pocket!
Also, I saw that "Logi Capture" showed up as a device that hangouts could select, but was always blank/muted
They first said that it wasn't their job to help
Then they pointed to a forum post saying it was the same problem, it was nothing of the kind
I really don't think they understood the problem, even though I HAD to explain over and over.
English is not their first language.
I found that I could get some rudimentary control via logitech camera settings, but the "logi capture" device issue was unaddressed. Once again I imagine due to their appalling English
Also noticed that the camera was flickering and constantly dropping frames. It seems that it doesn't cope well with any power fluctuations from the computer. The flickering clearly shows up in videos. So I ended up doing some research in order to fix this, which involved messing around with USB hardware and power settings in Windows. Eventually eliminated the flickering 90% of the time but the camera still drops frames and has the odd flicker now and again.
What finally made me return the camera for a refund was the autofocus. It was absolutely useless. I was using the webcam to do some video reviews and was holding objects fairly near to it. The webcam would try and focus then blur the object. As soon as you hold anything withing about a foot or two of the camera it does this - focuses fine then immediately blurs focus. I did some research and found that a lot of people had this problem, and the solution seemed to be to turn off the autofocus and avoid bringing anything close to the camera!
In the end returned for a refund - for over £70, just wasn't worth the money with all the issues. If you must get it then I'd get the cheaper, earlier model, as you'll probably end up using 30FPS anyway.
I first wrote a negative review for this saying that it did not work. I almost sent it back, but thought I would do more research before doing so as it's supposed to be one of the best out there. OK... so... I am using windows 10. If you are having problems getting this to work in windows or with any app, make sure you have your permissions set up right. Mine were switched off and thus would not work in windows OR in any app. I tried everything to try and get it working, but couldn't. Once I set the permissions correctly, it worked fine, everytime, and the quality is great too.
To check your permision in Windows 10, click once on the window icon bottom left, type camera, select the 'camera' app and the camera should just work. If not, it will tell you your permissions are wrong and from there, you can select 'change' permissions. I use it with OBS for my youtube channel and it works perfectly for that, and you can adjust all the setting in there for the camera too... brightness, contrast, saturation etc. Very good quality.
