It is worth the money for the clutter free receiver. I have had it for a day - so it is too early to comment on the battery life.
I pay almost no attention to turning it off and yet the batteries seem to last, much better than my Apple touch pad's. I guess there's a bit of energy-saving technology that puts it to sleep if I don't move it for a while or if the computer turns off. I use rechargeable batteries and have proactively recharged them once or twice since I purchased the mouse last fall. The batteries have never died out on me.
My one quibble would be there is no battery meter, either built into the mouse itself or through software installed on the laptop...the Apple has this. A built-in rechargeable battery with USB recharging might be nice, too, but for all I know, Logitech has that in a different model.
Responsiveness: The arrow moves just as i'd expect when i move the mouse. Other laser-mice have been too sensitive and i'll overshoot what i need to click on (always fun to click the exit button instead of maximize!) LED mice have been too weak and don't move as fast as i'd think or are too depending on the surface i use the mouse on so they stall along the way. This mouse, is just right.
Durability: I've had one bounce around in my backpack for months and never had a problem! I've also dropped it on the floor and the worse thing that happened was my language.
Battery Life: Literally so long that when the batteries FINALLY died in one, i was convinced my computer was trying to lock up for over a day. I'm glad the little red light caught my eye or i'm not sure what i would've ended up doing.
Gaming: I don't use a ton of extra buttons when i game and don't need surgical precision, i've never had a problem with any game using this mouse.
I'd hate to call something "perfect" but i've seriously never had any problem or disappointment with this product.
The mouse is powered by two AA batteries. By sliding a recessed switch at the bottom of the mouse the top pops off easily to install or remove the batteries. Hold the mouse upside down and top will simply fall off into your hand allowing one-hand removal of the top. Besides the batteries the small USB receiver can be inserted in a slot for storage when traveling. When you insert the USB receiver in the slot the mouse automatically turns off. Remove the receiver from the slot and the mouse turns on. Clever, outstanding design! Snap the battery cover back in place without having to hold the slide switch. There is also a very small push-button on the bottom to manually turn on or off the mouse.
The USB receiver is ultra tiny. It projects only ¼ inch beyond the USB slot. It could actually be left in your laptop or netbook and be entirely unobtrusive. The range of the receiver is fairly broad and certainly strong enough for any laptop use. But, if you want to use the mouse with a computer a fair distance from your screen Logitech provides a small extra USB stand on a 5 foot cord into which you can insert the receiver. Indeed, if you don't need this for the mouse you may want to use it as a USB extension cable.
The feel of the mouse is excellent, slightly recessed left and right sides and the two top buttons fit naturally under your two fingers. The scroll wheel is excellent providing slightly clicking stops as you rotate it. There is no 3rd button from the scroll wheel which I actually like as I never used it on other mice and would occasionally click it when it was not wanted. Some may find this a negative but I rate it a plus.
This mouse works anywhere. Well, almost anywhere. If you're stuck in an airline seat with no room on the drop down table for more than your laptop then simply roll the mouse on your pants leg. It seems to work just as well.
No software? No CD? No special drivers? Nope! Plug it in and use it. Of course you can change mouse setting from the Control Panel. I have now used this mouse on 3 computers, my desktop, my netbbook, and a friends computer that he brought over for repair and have absolutely no complaints or suggestions for improvements.
Logitech - Perfect! Thank you.
It's also extremely durable! I have dropped it on tile at least 6 times and nothing broke on it! Very impressive, Logitech!
The only thing I would do differently if I did it again would be to get a bluetooth version of this mouse so that I did not have the nano receiver sticking out of my laptop.
