Gee! I really thought that I had finally found a good left-hand mouse. WRONG!
Even though the mouse was priced at $149.99 + 4.95 S&H through AMAZON, I couldn't resist buying it . . . even at this outrageous price.
Big mistake. The mouse really felt great in my hand. However, after working for about 6 hours trying to get this mouse working, I had downloaded all of the latest updates and rebooted several times. I also tried moving the USB receiver in various positions. At one point, I even disabled my Norton internet safety protection to see if that was causing a problem. I do not believe that there are any interference issues here.
I've worked with and engineered many electronic products over the years. This mouse may indeed work for some of the slower speed PCs (i.e., 3 to 5 years old), but it seems to me that the mouse can not keep up with the data rate that my PC is pumping to the mouse.
Why is it that none of the big equipment suppliers offer a left-handed mouse? Using a right-handed mouse, when you are left-handed, causes many hand/wrist problems.
I recommend that Logitech take this product off of the market, re-engineer the electronics/firmware, and then place it into the market. The mouse does have a very good feel to it.
The product was shipped out very fast. At this moment, I am in the process of mailing it back to the Isaacstore today.
The shape actually feels pretty natural for my left hand, so if it was a little larger (the ergonomic shape forces the tips of my fingers to the edge of the mouse buttons) it would be almost perfect for me.
Too bad I received two in a row that died after ONE day of use. On both mice, the cursor movement stopped dead for no apparent reason. All of the other features of the mouse still worked, but it wouldn't budge. I tried them both on different PCs, tested the batteries, reset the power on the mice, rebooted the PC, etc, etc, and nothing worked. I wasn't even using the software on the replacement mouse.
So either the laser itself died on both mice, or some part of the USB transceiver stick died. I returned both mice and won't buy another, unless Logitech decides to update their lefty mouse in a new model.
PROS:
-----
1. IT'S FOR LEFTIES. Woohoo!
2. Good fit, even for my huge hand.
3. It's not too light or too heavy
4. Pretty good placement of basic buttons
5. This mouse had perfectly smooth movement until it died. No problems with being erratic like MANY other people experienced, but then again it was always only 1-2 feet from the transceiver.
CONS:
-----
1. DEAD AFTER ONE DAY. Twice.
2. POINTLESS EXTRA BUTTONS.
The email and IM buttons are incredibly useless and non-programmable. Outlook and any IM app will tell me on-screen if there's a message. How often do we actually LOOK at our mouse while we're using a PC? Why would I push a mouse button for email?
3. HARD WHEEL CLICK.
The wheel "click" is extremely hard compared to any other mouse I've used. By the time you've applied a ton per inch sq. to get the wheel pushed, you've accidentally scrolled to something else.
4. MX-610 DISCONTINUED.
The right-hand MX-610 is discontinued by Logitech, according to info posted by Logitech in it's own forum. This one is out of date and will be hard to find replacement parts for, like the transceiver. Why not update the lefty version to at least the better MX-620 style?
Nice mouse, but until Logitech comes up with a better one for Left-hand users, I'll use something else.
I bought the OCZ OCZMSEQRD Desktop Size Equalizer Laser Gaming Mouse at the same time, and it works great for me. Except for the rapid-fire button, it's symmetrical - not just for right-handers. It's also wired, but the wire is long, very thin, and almost weightless. I can deal with that since it actually works very well.
If the MX-610 had only died once and the replacement worked, I'd give it 4 stars. As it is I think 2 stars is more than fair.
Initially I thought I was going to have trouble because after rebooting my right button was back to being a "right-click", i.e. the buttons were right-handed. Until today I had alway used an ambidextrous mouse with the buttons set left-handed. This mouse is replacing such a mouse. But now I was back to right-handed buttons, I hopped into Control Panel to see about resetting to left-handed. Well Control Panel insisted that the mouse was already set for left-handed. So I "apply" and no dice. Try switching the driver for the touch pad to left handed. Still no dice. So I'm thinking I'm going to have to install the driver that everyone here is complaining about and it will be a bloated pig that won't run well. Then I recall that someone here wrote that it defaulted to left-handed buttons. So I try changing the setting in control panel from "left-handed" to "right-handed" and voilá - my buttons are back to being left-handed. Yea!
So, thus far, no need to install the driver. The mouse appears to be working just fine - even the browsing back and forward and volume control buttons (though I'm not used to having them so it will be a while before I'm used to using them).
FYI - my notebook is running Vista 64-bit, if that's relevant for anyone.
