I owned the original G9 mouse and loved it. So when a "new and improved" version hit the market, I couldn't resist picking it up. To be specific, I purchased my first G9X about two years ago when I upgraded my gaming rig. At that time - as usual - I went through all of the offerings from Razer, Saitek, Cyborg, Steel Series and the various Logitech models. That G9X has served me well but started to show some serious wear and tear. Also - like I said - I am addicted to buying new input devices whether I really need them or not. So once again plunged into the gaming grade mouse market.
This most recent foray took me to three different units. First I tried the Logitech Wireless G700 Gaming Mouse. I should have known from the start that this wouldn't be for me. I am one of those old school gamers that still pretends to feel lag from wireless units. Also, the G700 seemed to "float" on me when I needed it to be absolutely still. Then I tried the Cyborg R.A.T. 7 gaming mouse. Like others, I was thrilled with the level of customization that this mouse offered. But - in the end - all of those options had unfulfilled promise and tragic flaws. Also, the mouse wheel - which is a critical part for me - felt cheap and slow. I intend to write full reviews of these units later. But for now, suffice it to say that they are all solid units but all were also ultimately returned to Amazon.
To make a long story short, all of this brought me full circle and I purchased another G9X. Here is what I like most about this mouse that makes it simply the best gaming grade unit on the market. First, it is a comfortable mouse. I don't know much about ergonomics, but my hand does not get tired gripping the mouse and always feels in a natural position when using it. The two grips will cover any hand size and the textures are both pleasant to the touch. Second, when the mouse has no weights in it, it is very light. I have a tendency to lift my mouse when gaming, so a unit that is too heavy tires me out. The G9X is the perfect weight. Third, this mouse tracks flawlessly. With all of the other units I have tried they either jumped, floated or decelerated too much. The G9X is consistently tracks with total precision - rock solid when it is still and just as fast as you want it to be when in motion. Finally, the scroll wheel is a gift from heaven. This is the one feature that I simply cannot live without. It is so fast and so smooth that it changes the way you I approach and use the computer. Logitech must have patents on the technology because no other mouse has a smooth scrolling wheel like the Logitech. With the other units I tried, I found myself pining away for that smooth, fast wheel. And with a push of a button, it converts into a traditional scroll wheel for those who want it.
As with anything, the G9X does have a few flaws. The feet tend to wear out and lose their smoothness. After getting my new unit, I really noticed how much smoother it sped across my Zowie mouse pad (also highly recommended by the way). I wish that you could buy just the feet and replace them. It could use a few more buttons. There are no buttons on the right side of the mouse and only the traditional two on the left side. Modern games simply require at least eight buttons. Also, I don't like that the profile and microgear buttons on the bottom of the mouse. I wish they were on the top as with the Cyborg R.A.T. Finally, there is no real "Wow" factor with this mouse. It is pretty bare-bones in comparison with the competition.
In the end, I ran through the reviews, narrowed down my list and tried the three best offerings I could find. This all brought me back where I began - to the Logitech G9X. So, if you are odd like me and get really excited over a good input device, this should make your heart race. I highly recommend it.
For those who don't want the long-winded version, here is a list of pros and cons for this unit.
Pros:
- The best scroll wheel ever made. It has no equal.
- Great size and texture.
- Perfect tracking.
- DPI changing on-the-fly.
- Light weight.
- Long, high quality braided cord.
Cons:
- Feet wear out and get gritty. Can't replace just the feet.
- Not enough buttons.
- Profile and microgear buttons are on the bottom.
- No real "Wow" factor.
PS: This unit has been out for over two years now. I expect Logitech to release a new version or an entirely new wired mouse soon. Isn't that exciting! :)
I've not owned a Logitech mouse in awhile, but I've had various other Logitech products (desktop microphone, web camera, gameboard, etc), and they've all served me long and well. Generally speaking though, the shape of Logitech mice have never been comfortable for me. I tend to use a combination of claw and fingertip grip on my mice, and the Logitech mice always seemed to be bigger, bulkier, and more suited for palm grippers. Eventually I stopped even considering Logitech mice, but that was a good while ago. I decided to take a look at their mice products once more and based on reviews went with this product instead of the Razer Lachesis or Cyborg R.A.T. mice, and I've been very happy with my purchase.
This mouse has a surprising degree of customizability. The adjustable DPI has a wide range (200 to 5000) and can be changed very easily "on the fly" via the DPI button right below the Left Click button. At first I was a bit concerned that I might accidentally hit the DPI button often, but that's never really been an issue despite its placement. It feels texturally different from the Left Click button with its contours, so its easy to find with a fingertip without having to look at the mouse, but doesn't depress easily enough that you're accidentally pressing it all the time. Also, tracking is superb and accurate.
It comes with two interchangeable grips (Wide and Precision) to accomodate different play styles. I use the Precision Grip which has a grainy, tactile feel to it that's grippy for great control. I tried out the Wide Grip when I first received it - it had a really smooth, comfortable texture, but I can't really comment on it other than that.
Aesthetically, its simple and elegant without all the gimmicky lights and goofy-looking contours. Its has a quality braided cord that's very long, flexible, and doesn't kink. The Teflon feet are silky smooth even after a year.
Included also was a Altoid-like tin with various weights which can be inserted into a tray on the backend of the mouse. With a variety of configurations, it was really easy to play with the weight of the mouse, but I found that I preferred having no weights in mine. I tend to lift my mouse when gaming and without the weights its pretty light and doesn't fatigue. I do, however, really like having the option to change the weight if I wanted.
The profile of the mouse itself (without the Grips) is approximately 4" long, 2" wide, and 1 1/4" at the highest point - its a bit smallish width-wise but a nice, LOWER profile for the claw and finger grip styles. Both Grips boost the width between 2 1/2" and 2 3/4" with the Wide Grip offering a wider thumb rest. Its pretty comfortable to my 3 1/2" wide palm with an overall 7" from the bottom of the palm to the longest fingertip.
The buttons all feel solid and require just enough force to press them EXCEPT the middle button scroll wheel. While the scroll wheel works perfectly and has a nice tactile feel to it, it is really difficult to press. Therefore, I've left my middle button unprogrammed and just for scrolling. This is probably my biggest annoyance with this mouse. The other is also related to the two buttons on the side. Its easy to press the "bottom" side button, but its awkward to press the "top" side button when using a fingertip or claw grip. Those buttons sit around the midpoint of the mouse, but it would've been nicer if they could've moved them even 1/4" further back. If you're a "button junky" needing more than 4-5 though then this mouse probably isn't for you.
I didn't think I'd have much use for the custom-color LED display, but I've found its great for having a visual indicator to distinguish between multiple profiles. Profiles (along with everything else) are easy to set up with the included Logitech SetPoint software, by the way. You can also macro program, but I since I haven't used that I can't comment. The Profile and Microgear buttons are on the underside of the mouse, but that's really a minor quibble.
Overall even despite the few issues I have with the mouse, I would highly recommend this to anyone looking for a low-profile mouse packed with customizable features, but most importantly: precise.
