So I came looking at the possibility of replacing the battery and was absolutely shocked by the price tag of one of these new!

This morning I was rewiring the recharging dock because the wires were exposed and figured i'd see about the battery. After taking apart the mouse and the charging dock, this is a very serviceable mouse. The battery appears to be replaceable though it is not their new dongle so be sure not to lose yours.

I bought this mouse in 2010 because I really liked the way it sits in your hand. It's very comfortable and has many buttons that are done well. Most mice just sprinkle buttons all over but they are very distinct. With the earlier drivers, you were able to set so many cook tasks or key presses to the buttons. This was before the software we have now. I used this mouse for 4 years before finally switching to the G700. 1 G700's wireless receiver fried and they sent a second. The MX revolution has served me without question for many many years and as long as any issues are serviceable, I won't give it up.

+Many buttons. The second wheel isn't really a wheel so much as a spring loaded roller to activate 2 switches. The main scroll wheel can tilt to add 2 more buttons.
+Extremely comfortable. The G700 tries but there is something about the revolution that is amazing in the hand.
+Brilliant charge indicator
+Nice little dock
+Easy for small DIY repairs - I have had to fix some exposed wires on the dock from a bad fall (My Fault) and many users have done videos on replacing batteries and micro switches. I can see this mouse still working in 10 years.
- It's a bit heavy but I personally don't mind that at all.
-Some of the surfaces have not aged as well as I would have hoped. After 6 years (how dare you make a mouse that lasts this long Logitech), some of the coatings are wearing off.

In closing, would I pay 500 bucks for a new one? Not a damn chance... Would I consider buying one used for around 70-110? Absolutely. It's sad to say that I really feel like Logitech has let their bean counters ruin their products. I say this as someone who has many Logitech products that when made, where the best on the market and have lasted. My TV/Media pc runs through a set of Logitech Z680's that sound absolutely awesome. I love these so much, that when I burnt an internal fuse (Also my fault) on 2 different occasions, I completely disassembled the amp and replaced the fuses.

I really do hope Logitech finds their roots and starts making the amazing hardware built to last that they once did. I still have a 518 that works after many drops...Having a G700 burn out the receiver after 8 months of use is unacceptable from a company that has made so many amazing products. They honored the warranty and replaced it though.

Great Mouse, But Flawed Microswitch Gives It a Short Life

The good thing is that the MX Revolution is the best mouse I have ever used from a functionality standpoint. Unfortunately it has a major, fatal flaw that makes it a computer consumable - and an expensive one at that!

Pros:

1) Excellent precision. The mouse tracks perfectly at very close work. No drifting, no lag time. I see some reviews here that indicate otherwise and that is usually due to interference from another wireless source nearby. Some claim that a wireless router placed too close can cause interference but that is not the case. Wireless routers cannot interfere with this mouse's wireless signal; that's just not true. Other small handheld devices are usually the culprits, with cell phones being the biggest offenders. If you get such interference try to keep your cell phone at least four to five feet away from the mouse and receiver.

2) Features: Unfortunately Logitech has designed their driver/software for this mouse without allowing it to take advantage of all the features available with the hardware. Fortunately someone else has made it possible to access these features anyway, and free of charge. Richard Owens, a regular at Logitech's forums, has written UberOptions, which installs over Logitech's Setpoint software and adds in the ability to tweak the mouse much more than Setpoint does itself. UberOptions also allows you to change any of the mouse buttons' functions to whatever you wish. One big failing of Setpoint is that it does not give the MX Revolution the ability to use the "middle-click" feature that is a staple of virtually all other three-button mice. UberOptions fixes this. Logitech should be paying him for making the MX Revolution as utile as it is. I don't know if Amazon allows links in reviews, so just use Google and search for "UberOptions".

3) The scroll wheel can scroll slowly or very, very quickly. And it accelerates, meaning that you can scroll a page in a browser or in an Office application at normal speeds and then if you need to get back to the top of the page quickly you can spin it hard and it will "free-wheel" and get there in a split second. Very neat but hard to picture until you try it!

4) Battery time has been extremely good for me, and I have had five MX Revolution mice. The reviews that say it is poor are a little baffling to me as I have never seen a problem with the battery time. I can use the mouse for 10-12 hours daily for three or four days and the charge level doesn't drop below 60%, which is pretty amazing IMO. However most of the time it doesn't matter because the charger is right on my desk so when not in use I just drop the mouse into its cradle and it is fully charged the next time I use it.

Cons:

1) The biggest single drawback of the MX Revolution - even bigger than its exorbitant price - is that the microswitch under the left mouse button is weak and usually fails in well under one year, depending on how often and how hard you use the mouse. When the microswitch fails you will know by the way that pressing the left mouse button will cause a double-click to occur. This is both frustrating and dangerous - for your files, that is. No danger to the user of course, unless you get frustrated enough to throw the mouse and hit something you shouldn't! E.g., you click on a program's setup file in Windows Explorer in order to move it or copy it/delete it - whatever you plan to do with the file - and a double-click is registered. The program will then start installing as if you double-clicked the file. Clicking a tab in Firefox is registered as a double-click which - if configured as such - closes the tab instead of bringing it into focus. The only redeeming thing about this issue is that Logitech will replace the mouse under warranty for this issue, and the warranty for the MX Revolution is three years, so you CAN get a replacement for a failed MX Revolution. But you might want to have a spare mouse just in case. I have been fortunate in that Logitech has sent me warranty replacements without requiring me to return the failed mouse, meaning I was not without a mouse except for the shipping time.

All in all the MX Revolution is the best functioning mouse I have used, but its right microswitch failure rate is unacceptable as it is, especially since it has been defective for at least four years now.

So close yet so far.

This is one of those products that starts out great but ends up just ok.

First, it really doesn't fit all hands. The buttons are fine, but the palm rest is either not big enough or tapers off too quickly. For my finger to comfortably use the scroll wheel, part of my palm and part of my wrist rest on the desk causing fatigue.

Secondly, in Firefox, the "back button" injects special character into dialog boxes if there is no page to go back to. Also, if you have search-as-you-type enabled, it will also inject a special character (') into the search field. I had to map Alt-Left to get ride of it. But why not have it just work.

Thirdly, after about six months the right side grip surface started peeling. Logitech support wouldn't touch this issue and told me to contact their sales office. I'm waiting to see if they will replace it. But even if they do, it won't be long till the new one peels too.

Forth, the battery only has about two days (max) of heavy usage. However, it does appear to charge fast. Also, the battery is not replaceable.

Fifth, if you're like me, and have a desk with a keyboard tray that is not big enough for a full sized keyboard (with numpad) and a mouse side-by-side, and have to place the mouse in front of the keyboard, you'll hate the wrap-around mouse buttons. If I happen to bump the keyboard with the mouse, I inadvertently click a button. It would be nice if the buttons were protected by a front bezel.

Some of these are small gripes, but the comfort issue is big. I'd put up with the rest, because this mouse is feature rich with assignable buttons, and very good accuracy. But for the price I expect perfection.

I would say its worth only about half its msrp and that is only if it fits your hand.
