Like it so much, I own two.
5 out of 5 stars
Like it so much, I own two.
An excellent mouse from Logitech.I like this mouse so much I have two, one for the work laptop (Windows XP) and one for home use (Mac OS X).There are some minor quibbles, which I note below, but the VX Revolution gives a great value for the price (especially when Logitech has a rebate going.)Size.The first thing to note about this mouse is its size. It's marketed as a "notebook mouse", and physically a bit smaller than a full-size desktop mouse. It seems quite a bit bigger (relatively) than mini or travel mice aimed at laptop users. I'm a 6ft tall male, and this mouse is just on the cusp of being too small; any smaller and I wouldn't care for it. If there's any doubt, test drive one in the store first.Buttons.This mouse has the standard 5 buttons (left, right, wheel-click/middle plus the back and forward buttons on the left side), and a couple extras.Below the mouse wheel is the "Internet search button". By default (on Windows) this button finds the highlighted text in the active window and does a search on it in a browser. I don't find this useful in practice, and luckily you can remap the function of this (or any other) button. I usually keep it set to "Open Outlook".On the right side, on top, above the back/forward buttons is the zoom slider. This slide is, for me, the biggest negative. It feels rough and looks cheap, and the sliding action is nowhere smooth enough to feel right in an application. I would have preferred a set of 3 clickable buttons (Volume -/+/Mute) as on the MX 610, but you can't have everything. I keep the slider mapped to increase/decrease volume, and don't use it for zooming.Mouse Wheel. The "Hyperscrolling" feature of the mouse wheel is a combination of mouse wheel mechanics and driver software that let you crank the sensitivity way up. The wheel supports a base speed and an acceleration, so if you scroll a little you move a little, but if you scroll faster you move a lot faster. It takes some tweaking the settings to get to a comfortable level.Even better, there's a switch on the bottom of the mouse to change the wheel between free-scrolling and ratcheted operation. I prefer ratcheted, but the action in either mode is very nice, and never gummy.Drivers.On Windows I use the supplied SetPoint drivers, but I also install the 3rd part "UberOptions" package. UberOptions provides additional configuration files that allow you to map any mouse button to any SetPoint-supported function. (For whatever reason, out of the box SetPoint doesn't not allow certain functions to be applied to certain buttons.)On OS X the supplied drivers are adequate, but I prefer using the 3rd party "USB Overdrive" software. USB Overdrive lets you set the mouse speed and acceleration far above what the Logitech drivers (or basic Apple drivers) allow, and let you remap button functions as well.Misc.The USB receiver for this mouse is smaller than a memory stick, and fits in a slot in the base of the mouse when not in use. Inserting the receiver into the mouse turns off the mouse, which was a neat touch. A button on the bottom of the mouse ejects the receiver, and turns the mouse on as well. The reception is the best I've had yet with a wireless mouse, and I never have any dropped clicks (except when the battery is almost low.) The mouse runs on a single AA battery, and lasts weeks at a time, depending on usage.

I have been using Logitech pointing devices more than 15 years. They are consistently the best quality and the easiest on my joints (since I develop software for a living). At this point I will use nothing else.

The VX is smaller than other Logitech mice (such as the MX 1000 I use at home), but it is reasonably weighted and has a good solid feel. Settings (speed, sensitivity, etc.) are quite customizable, as are all the buttons. It almost goes without saying that if you are going to use this mouse, install the accompanying software and update the software to the latest version from the Logitech website.

I especially like the way the wireless USB dongle stows away inside the mouse when not being used, also turning the mouse off to conserve the battery. As for the battery, it uses a single standard AA, and obtains a very reasonable lifetime out of it.

Even though this mouse is sold as a laptop mouse, and for which it is quite appropriate (it has a small, portable size, and packs up easily for travel), I would certainly use it as my permanent desktop mouse, if I didn't already have a really great mouse, already.

I've owned one of these for well over 2 years and bought this 2nd one at my son's request to go with a new laptop computer he got for school. Small enough to fit in a laptop messenger bag, but sized more like a desktop mouse to fit your hand comfortably. I also own the larger MX revolution for a desktop machine and prefer the VX over it.

Great feel & if you want to tune its operation to specific software features (It's user selectable/context sensitive in that regard), it's very easy to set up with the included software. Very handy web navigation & office application productivity controls all of which are well positioned beneath different fingers. Battery life is outstanding compared to other cordless mice I've owned. It takes a single AA cell and it usually averages about 8 weeks on a premium brand alkaline, although it varies a bit with use & battery shelf age. I don't think I've replaced a battery in much less than 5-6 weeks and the longest one has gone has been about 10-12 weeks.

It is a right handed mouse with a clearly defined thumb rest and control set, so lefties be aware - My son is a lefty, but likes a right handed mouse, so no issue for him. Only thing that could be improved is if Logitech would supply it with a tiny USB transceiver like the VX Nano uses and if the scroll wheel mode select were more accessible. If you don't switch wheel modes often, then that "complaint" is irrelevant. The transceiver complaint is common to most cordless mice, but it'd be nice if you could use the smaller Nano transceiver (they're not compatible though). I'd definitely pony up $10.00 for a replacement if they did to avoid the risk of damaging my laptop's USB ports cramming it in the case with the transceiver hanging out (been there, done that once already).

First off, I'm using it with XP pro.

1. very easy installation process (However, putting battery in is quite tricky but not really a problem.)

2. It comes a very small receiver, which is good in tight space and can be stored nicely and safely inside the mouse for travel. This also shuts the mouse down to save more energy on the go.

3. The battery indicator is quite useless. It only comes up when you first turn the mouse on and then fades away. I'm a very mobile user and I want to see how much left all the time.

4. If you choose to install the setpoint software (which I strongly recommend but just disable the auto-update feature; it's very annoying.), The buttons work wonder. I don't have any problem flipping it over to change from free-form scrolling to click 2 click. I'm a click 2 click person and I have to say I've also tried the free-form. It's very slippery and my document keep sliding up and down. (Or you can do it slowly) CAUTION: scrolling is slow! even with the maximum speed setting and accelerating. Zooming in and out is very tricky for me but may be because I have small and sleek right hand. :)

5. It's very ergonomic and the precision of laser tracking system is very good. It gives me a very smooth clicking experience.

overall, a very good notebook mouse on the go. I got it for around $30 so it's very well worth the price.

My first cordless mouse was a Logitech, then switched to the various wireless MS meeses, and then settled in on the latest greatest. The VX Revo' from Logitech is awe-some-ful.

All the other people having any a problem with it could have solved 99 percent of them by using a different USB port. It runs great on Vista and XP. Had issues with IE7 and scrolling slowly, that's it. Runs from anywhere in a room, even on a couch. MS mouse varieties had trouble getting away from the table. The person that said it only runs on a white table must have been looking at my MS mice. I still use my MS mice, and they run fine. A Volkswagen will get you somewhere too.

The VX is the only mouse I know of that gives programmable buttons for play/pause, multi-volume controls, zooming, next/back/forward/previous, controls for movies and music, and starting various programs that you may use the most. The scroll wheel is the bomb. One flick and you can fly to the bottom of a hundred pages, or flip it over and switch to ratchet scroll. The USB chip hides in the body of the mouse when not in use. The software will notify you when batteries are at a critical level, and one AA battery goes fooreeeveer. The laser pickup beats MS mice hands down. I put it on a glass table top and it tracked perfect. I just now put it down on the carpet and it ran perfect. Haven't tried Jello.

Great gaming mouse also, and again far lighter and trackable than my MS tank meeses. If your computer is running clean and free of trouble I would guarantee this little guy to work better than almost any other computer peripheral you've owned. I own three of these mice, and run them on XP and Vista from everywhere and performs. It is in my top ten of items I recommend and have owned on computer.
