I was so excited to get the POP based on what I read it could do. We have a full array of Sonos devices in our house as well as August locks and Lutron Caseta lights. We also use the excellent Logitech Hubs for our remote controls.
I purchased a starter kit and 2 additional pops. Here is how I am using them.
Kitchen - POP button 1:
1. Play/Pause Sonos with Apple Music
2. Play/Pause Sonos with Spotify Top Hits
3. Play/Pause Sonos with NPR
Kitchen - POP button 2:
1. Turn off Sonos, and Turn on TV
3. Turn off TV
Bedroom - POP button:
1. Play/Pause Sonos with NPR
2. Play/Pause Sonos with Spotify Top Hits
3. Turn off Sonos and Bedroom Lights
Super easy. Plug in hub, set up app, and add POP devices.
In the app you discover all your local devices (Sonos) and then cloud authorize Harmony, Lutron and August.
Each POP comes with that cool double sticky stuff that is removable and re-usable.
You just drags and drop, chose options for each device (such as toggle or on/off) and you can also add multiple devices per command
Each button has 3 commands (single click, double click, long press)
Sonos - updated on 10/21 - fixed
You cannot group speakers together. No sonos interface can do this except Sonos for some reason. Also, if you make changes to your Sonos playlists (which is how you select items to play) it doesn't seem to refresh without re-discovering.
You can't easily control volume.
You can't skip songs.
Harmony - updated on 10/21 - fixed
If you have two Harmony hubs in your house (for 2 TVs) you have to pick one to use. You cannot seemingly pair two different buttons to different Hubs. It's one hub per account.
Update: the latest POP update supports Sonos Grouping and multiple harmony hubs. Great job Logitech!
The most frustrating part of setting this up for me was when I disconnected a switch and tried to reconnect it. When you initially connect a switch, you're given the option to name it. I named my switch and decided to change the name the next day. There is no way that I could find to easily change the name without 'forgetting' the switch from the app. Disconnecting it was easy enough, it was just a matter of swiping it off the screen, but reconnecting it was not as easy. There is no directions in the app to do this. Common sense told me to just add it as if I were adding it for the first time, however, this did not work. I tried finding the answer from their website, but it was not there. Emailing support proved to be literally impossible; after going through multiple steps through their website, I got an error message saying their support was not available. I was beginning to think there was no way to connect it and I was left with a useless switch, but after many attempts and a few breaks in between, I figured out that if you try to connect a switch that was previously connected, you must long press the button BEFORE you put the app in discovery mode. Once that was done, I was back up and running.
I put one switch in my kitchen and have it set to play/pause a couple of Sonos playlists as well as fire off a recipe I built in IFTTT. The second button is in my livingroom and is used to set the lighting depending on if I'm watching tv, listening to music, or reading. Despite the setup, once you get through it, these buttons are a charm. They are low profile and very inconspicuous. The plastic is smooth with a little bit of texture to it and wipes clean, should you get them dirty. The presses provide a satisfying tactile feedback and are very responsive. Actions take place almost instantly after presses. I'm able to play/pause my music without reaching for my phone, which is awesome. I wish this app would let me skip songs as well, but hopefully that will come in an update. The included adhesive is strong and placing the white button on my white wall makes for a sleek look, almost as if the switch was always and meant to be there.
I have other switches and buttons around the house for various devices. I have bluetooth buttons, z-wave remotes, wifi buttons, and Philips Hue-made switches. They all have their flaws and uses. While this switch also has its flaws, it's still a good option, especially if you want a simple button that doesn't need much explanation. The other buttons I have are mainly for use by only me because they have so many options that explaining what each button does to visitors is too time consuming and confusing. With these switches, I can put them out for company and since I have them linked to just a few simple and obvious actions, it doesn't require too much explanation. I plan on getting at least one more to use upstairs. This is a good option for those who have multiple smart devices across platforms that want an easy convenient way to link some of them together or for those who need a simple action button that can be used by multiple people.
Main problem is coverage area of the bridge. If your button is close to bridge it registers every click immediately. If button is farther away (e.g. lower level) you need multiple clicks till one registers. The experience is inconsistent so that is disappointing.
According to Logitech web site specs the bridge range is 50ft, and you can add more bridges for larger coverage but as of now there us no way to buy these.
I have been using this for new months now. Logitech updated the app and added toggle options, however the bridge became unstable and need power cycle every few days. What I did to workaround it is to connect the bridge to power through a 25$ wifi plugin outlet adapter that I programmed to power cycle every night. With this and using buttons only near the bridge I have stable setup, ymmv and I still view this as 3 stars considering the limitations and workarounds.
On the positive side the button works reliably for months in my steam shower, which is very nice.
I previously tried the flic switches which were unreliable, slow, and required a Bluetooth connection to a phone running the flic app. The pop switches communicate via a small hub which plugs into a power socket which I'm guessing is why they are so much more reliable.
Maybe now my girlfriend will appreciate our smart home.
