Top customer reviews
• The sound quality is great if it is used with a dedicated sound card (e.q Soundblaster x-fi).
• Great durability and still works (almost 9 years old)
• Strong subwoofer that can shake the room
• When used on integrated sound card, the sound quality is not that good.
• Neighbor complaints
• If the control pod dies then the subwoofer is useless. However, the speakers can be reused with a receiver
Really good sound quality for these surround speakers when used with a dedicated sound card. Great durability and lasted 10 years before the control pod died.
UPDATE: It is now 2015 and the control pod died after 10 years.
However, the control pod is made of very questionable components. I bought this system in October of 2008. Since then I've had to RMA three control pods with Logitech. All three have had the same issue: flickering LCD panel. But beware!! Each time I sent in my control pod and remote to Logitech to be replaced. The first two RMA's Logitech sent back to me a whole new Z-5500 system---yes, the whole kit'n'kaboodle. The third RMA they sent *only* a new control pod to me. So now I am out of a remote and the battle with Logitech to get my remote is ongoing as I type this (this latest control pod RMA was processed at the end of April 2011). So if you have to send your control pod to Logitech for replacement, do not send your remote or anything else! Only send the control pod. Even if they say to "send in the control pod and any related hardware".
All in all, this speaker system is superb and I can highly recommend it to anyone. I just wish Logitech used better electronics in the control pods and didn't steal my remote.
It will do so quite well if set correctly. For example if using this surround sound on a computer set the equalizer on the media player accordingly for the type of music being played.Rock/country will require setting the Equalizer midrange low to neutral or this system's satellites will shriek the mids rather badly at high volume.Any music with a lot of mid will require this. The only knock on this systen I can find is a slight lack of lower end midrange. If the sub seems muddy, turn the bass down a bit;that 10 hits pretty hard at high volume. The settings on the control pod can assist with fine-tuning the system, but I've found the EQ settings on the media player seem to help more.If this system is used on a PC using the Windows Media Player, turn off the SRS WOW Effects.Especially the TruBass. That doesn't help, not with this system.
Have not tried a Z-5500 as a surround on a TV so cannot say how it would sound hooked up via coax but cant imagine it would be much different. I have played movies on the desktop its hooked up to and it sounds great.
It's definitely one loud surround sound system.
One small note:If trying to hook this up to a laptop, you'll more than likely need an external sound card with the 3 RCA inputs. My laptop only has 2 RCA inputs,so I'm not sure this system would work with with it as is.
