So, what's so good about the Logitec Ultimate Ears 500? First, the sound is great for both music and podcasts. It handles both base and treble well, so the sound is full. No, it won't match your subwoofer or the base boost on your stereo, but music listening was very enjoyable. Additionally, it has excellent clarity, making podcasts listening much easier. In fact, the sound reproduction was so clear, that I would occasionally confuse sound effects such as a ringing phone, foot steps or car horns as the real thing. On airplanes, I found they blocked outside sound as good as my noise cancellation headphones, and were much more comfortable.
I just need to leave one warning, namely the reason why I initially gave only 4 stars. After a few months of use, the silicone tips pop off inside your ear canal when you pull out the buds. Sometimes I can retrieve the tip with my fingers, but several times I needed tweezers to get them out. They also pop-off when pulling the ear buds out of your pocket or bookbag, so if you don't find where they dropped, you'll have to buy replacement tips after you use up the extra tips that come with the ear buds.
However, I have noticed a steep drop in price (perhaps since taken over by Logitech?), but I also feel I have noticed a decline in quality...sadly. Not so much the quality of the sound, but the quality of the bud itself.
I have. Ever had an UE fall apart on me, and my last 3 actually had the wires come off the earbuds, and one headset actually came apart. All ended up in the garbage, something that has never happened to any of my older sets.
None the less, I am rating these 5 star, as I am an eternal optimist. Also, the price point was so low, they are almost disposable <g>. But also because the sound and feel of the UE 500vi is really good. So good, I am tempted to buy a backup pair for when these ultimately break.
The first thing I did was change the ear buds to Complys. I think they sound so much better then any if the plastic ear pieces. I also took a couple days to break them in (played all kinds of music through them before wearing). I know some people think this is not really necessary, but as it doesn't hurt anything, and psychology is a big part of any experience, so I do it anyway.
Verdict: terrific sound, great fit and an awesome set of of earphones that work great on my IPhone 5s
The UE 500 have a few design elements I like--the cable is flat and does a good job of resisting any tangles or knots and the 1/8" plug is one of the 90 degree versions. Other things I am not so sold on though: the "chrome" finish of the earbuds themselves leaves something to be desired and I miss the red ring around the right earbud that my last UEs had--it made for very quick identification of which earbud went in which ear, something that I find myself having a harder time with on this pair (there is a small R and L printed on each earbud on the underside--I may just use a paint marker to place a red dot on my right earbud to remedy).
Overall, I have a new favorite earphone to use and find myself reaching for these over my much pricer pair of Schure's.
