This book was mostly non-stop action from beginning to end. Think TAKEN, but with a woman rather than a man. In LOLA ON FIRE we follow the story of Lola, a trained mafia mercenary who wants to get out of the life for good. She leaves, assumes a new identity, and starts a family, only to have to run again. Her past catches up with her in a big way.
LOLA ON FIRE has the kind of characters you root for, the kind of flawed characters that you want to come out on top even though you know they may not 100% deserve it. The villains are larger than life and the kind you just love to hate.
My only criticism was that it seemed as though things happened a little too conveniently for the protagonist at times. Over all, a fun quick read that will have you turning the pages.

Despite the title of the book, the synopsis, and the blurbs comparing Lola Bear to Salander, she is NOT the focus of the book. Which is a shame. A far more interesting, to me, book would’ve centered around what Lola was doing the years she was hiding. Instead we follow her far less interesting son as he is threatened by a mobster and searches for his superhero mother to save him. There are a few interesting twists early on but the ending, though action packed, is entirely predictable and I raced through the last 30 pages.

There is a quote on the back cover of LOLA ON FIRE saying that it's a wild, relentless read, but for me, that pins a sort of cocaine-fuelled WOLF OF WALL STREET vibe onto it, an overbearing feeling that really doesn't do it much justice.
This one has a big heart running all the way through, and there's not just one story going on here either. Every character has one to tell, and you'll be rooting for more than one of them. I guarantee it.
Rio's writing is always great.
The action never feels over the top.
The pacing is spot on.
Everything feels just right.
I've said it before, but it's only a matter of time before one of Rio's books hits the big screen. This could well be the one, and hopefully the starter for many more. His back catalogue is something else. I talk about his work all the time.

I'm also delighted to hear that Jim Meskimen is voicing the audiobook of this. I've been a fan of his impressions for a good few years now. Check him out on YouTube. He's incredible.
My most anticipated read of next year came early. I feel so very fortunate to have received this ARC.
It didn't disappoint.
Look out for LOLA ON FIRE in February 2021.
