It's not chicken -- but it's not bad

I have a theory that most of the vegetarian foods which claim to taste like a non-vegetarian food exist primarily because those who converted to a vegetarian lifestyle miss those foods but either they have been away from them long enough that they don't really remember what they taste like or they just really want to believe in the substitute so badly that they have convinced themselves that it really does taste like the original. In my experience, it never does, and that's certainly true here. This doesn't have the taste of chicken, the texture of chicken . . . it's really nothing like chicken (and the "gravy" looks like gravy but that's where the similarity ends). This really doesn't have that much flavor -- it is very bland. That's not to say that there's nothing to like about it. The blandness makes it a good base. With some seasonings, a few extra ingredients, and a bit of creativity one can make some pretty decent dishes and though it still won't taste like chicken, it can still make a decent meal even if one isn't a vegetarian (I'm not). And if one is a vegetarian jonesing for meat, it has enough meat-like qualities that many seem to like it even as bland as it is straight out of the can -- add a bit of flavor and you've got a dish which can work for anyone. In some ways it's a bit surprising that anyone even tries to come up with fake meat -- one can create many delicious vegetarian dishes that don't approximate meat in any way but I suppose if one really misses it, products like this can help one deal with that. For me, it's just another color on the palette. In this case, it's a pretty neutral color so I can't exactly rate it highly particularly since its suggestion that it is like chicken seems so far afield, but I have made some pretty decent dishes with it so you can take that for what it's worth.

A helping hand for former meat eaters

When my family and I first converted to vegetarianism there was a dearth of products available that imitated those dishes we were avoiding. It is truly difficult to go from eating all sorts of meat dishes one day to none the next. Thank goodness for the folks at Loma Linda, who seem to have had a feel for all of us former carnivores. This product, Fried Chik'N with Gravy, is good enough right out of the can to serve for your next main course. Yes, you can cut up the chik'n and make other things with it, and the gravy can be used by itself, but it is very good just as is. Yes, it definitely has a lingering 'beany' taste, but if you are like we are, you quite enjoy beans and that adds, rather than detracts, from this product. No gristle, no bone, no skin, no nasty side products, just fine flavored imitation chicken-like chewables. Two thumbs up!

Hello first of all I if you haven't already seen my star rating for this item, I've rated it 4 stars. And I meant every one of them. However this is just the opinion of one person (myself).

When reading reviews something to consider is the fact that we all have different taste buds. While this product may taste great to me, it may taste like garbage to you. That being said here is my critical review of this product.

1. Does not taste exactly like chicken, however it is a great chicken alternative that taste somewhat like chicken. It does taste good.

2. The consistency is excellent. It's just the right thickness that you can easily cut with a fork.

3. Flavor is good by itself, but for those of you who require a little bit more, I suggest using "Seasoning Salt" and some "Black Pepper" or whatever you prefer... Garlic maybe?

4. Taste best with rice or noodles.

There's my review. Please consider...

Not quite as good as Frichik!

I ordered this because they were out of the Worthington Frichik. We like both but this is not quite as good. The texture is different and the flavor slightly different. However it is an acceptable alternative. For those not familiar with either product this is great in sandwichs, salads, casseroles or fixed in gravy to go with mashed potatoes. We also like it just plain cold but don't usually indulge in eating it that way.

What Happened to the Flavor?

I used to buy this all the time & I grew up eating it & a lot of the other Loma Linda/Worthington products. It seems somebody has messed with the recipe for this one, again! It never did taste like real chicken, but it always had a very good flavor for what it is, a meat analog. Unfortunately, this last case I have just received is missing something...The flavor! We have already tried 3 cans of it, thinking that maybe it was just a fluke for one or 2 cans, but apparently it's the "NEWEST" version because each can is the same, tastless! The gravy is a lot thinner too & also missing the flavor! We went through this a couple years ago when the manufacture basically ruined our favorite meat analog, the Loma Linda Redi-Burger! Our last 2 cases of the Redi-Burger was nothing but a mushy, odd tasting mess, nothing like it used to be! It went from being a solid product that you could slide out of the can & slice to a disgusting, Sloppy-Joe consistency that tasted bitter & weird. Now I guess the manufacture is determined to ruin the Fried Chik'n too! This last case of the Fried Chik'n has about the same texture as it used to have; sort of chewy; but the flavor is totally gone! I suspect the manufacture was trying to reduce the high salt content, but the flavor went out the door too. I don't think we will be buying this one anymore & I'm going to cancel our subscription to it. For the high price these items are, they are so not worth it any more! VERY DISSAPOINTING!!!

These fried chik'n cutlets are a huge favorite around our house. I'm vegetarian, and the others are not, but we eat vegetarian within our walls. This chik'n has been a real hit, both as a meat-substitute item for a main dish (just thicken the gravy a bit), and chopped for turning into casseroles and rice dishes.
The prices on these products are excellent compared to buying single hard-to-find cans on a grocery shelf. I buy this one on subscription every two months, because it is so useful.
