With the official Fuji models (Instax 210, 300) being very limited in terms of specs, this item seemed like a great replacement. And in some areas it is.
To start off, this camera uses the INSTAX WIDE format, not the INSTAX MINI. This is an "instant film" camera that spits out photos and they develop within a few minutes.
In the box:
This was surprising. You get the camera, 4 flash filters, a remote-control lens cap, a wide-angle lens, wide-angle viewfinder, close-up lens and "splitzer" (more on all of these below).. but you don't get batteries or a camera strap.
The camera runs off 4X AA batteries and does work with rechargable batteries (I mention this as the FUJI 300 camera has trouble with rechargables)
The design isn't so great. On paper (or in photos) it looks fine, but in person it's very boxy with sharp edges. It feels like holding a brick. While the INSTAX 210 wasn't great, I felt it was improved with the Instax 300. The LOMO feels like a 3D-Printed camera that could not have rounded edges.
Where the LOMO shines. The official fuji models only have 2 buttons: Darker/Lighter and Force-Flash. No "Flash off", no "Multiple exposure" no real settings other than darker/lighter and forcing the flash. The LOMO changes this by adding a whole set of buttons to the back:
FLASH: Turn the flash ON or OFF (on by default)
MX: Turn on multiple-exposure (unlimited! Takes 2 or 20)
Exposure +1/-2: Similar to the darker/lighter on the fuji, lowers or raises brightness by 1 stop
Off/A/B/30: The power switch - rotate to AUTO, BULB (takes photo as long as the button is held) or 1/30 sec locked-shutter.
APERTURE: The Fuji models are locked at f/14. Regardless of setting, you're shooting at f/14. This is nice as the area of focus is very large but it requires quite a bit of light. The LOMO has a mixed aperture of f8 or f22. Unfortunately, there is no way to choose which you want, it's all decided by the camera. A slight tilt of the lens will change it from f/8 to f/22 which will make quite a difference. I would have much prefered a fixed aperture so you know what you're getting (or at least a way to set it yourself as the built-in meterisn't the best)
Extras: The LOMO has a PC-sync socket. This allows you to plug in a studio flash to take photos. Set the camera to 1/30 sec and set your power on the lights for neat studio shooting. The FUJI doesn't have this and it was a big selling point for me. I found it worked really well. Meter for f/8 and ISO 800 and you'll get nice results.
The LOMO also has 2 extra lenses; a wide-angle lens (I believe 21mm equivalent) and a close-up adapter. I found these to be neat extras but more trouble than they're worth. They screw onto the front of the existing lens, so quality isn't the best. The wide-angle lens has a 2nd viewfinder you can pop in to get a more accurate reading. This means multiple extras to carry around with you.
The 2nd lens is a close-up (macro) lens which screws onto the main lens. It lets you focus at 3.9 inches from the lens -- don't bother looking through the viewfinder, just try to measure 3.9 inches and point the lens at your subject. The area of focus is very small (less than 1 inch) and the on-camera flash will severely over-expose it, so make sure you have other lighting to use for it.
The lomo includes a SPLITZER which allows neat effects for Multiple Exposure, splitting the frame into much smaller segments. Lastly, included are 4 colored flash filters. I haven''t tried these, but they change the color of the built in flash (small plastic pieces that you insert over the flash). I found the whole lot a "neat bonus" but a lot to carry around with you.
Sleep Mode: The LOMO goes to sleep after about 2 minutes. This means that even though the camera is set to a shooting mode, it will turn off. The problem here is you need to turn it off and then back on to wake it up, and doing so removes all of the settings (flash off, multiple exposure) so you may waste frames.
Lens Cap: The FUJI extends the lens and opens the lens automatically when turned on. The LOMO has a lens cap. This is nice and bad at the same time: Since the viewfinder is not connected to the lens (like a DSLR) you can take photos with the lenscap on without knowing it. On the other hand, the lenscap is a really neat wireless remote control that can take photos from a distance.
TRIPOD: The FUJI 210 does not have a tripod mount. The 300 and LOMO do have a tripod socket (1/4")
SHARPNESS/CLARITY: The FUJI cameras as sharper. Since they're f/14 they have a larger area of focus and it's hard to miss it. Set it at 3-9 feet or 9+ feet. The LOMO is f/8 (so not as sharp) and uses a focusing ring - change it from .6 meters to 1-2 meters to infinity. Problem is, you don't really know which is which. Is 1-2 meters actually 1 or 2 meters? is infinity 2+ meters or 3+ meters?
Viewfinder: I found the viewfinder on the Instax 300 to be much easier to use. It's more accurate and easier to see through. It's also on the opposite side as the LOMO which makes using the lomo a bit weird.
EXPOSURE: I found the FUJI 300 to be very accurate. ~90+ percent of shots are in focus and exposed properly. With the LOMO it's much more hit or miss. With the camera being F8 and ISO 800, it can often end up with shots way too bright (even in -1 mode).
I found the LOMO shots to come out a bit dreamy. A nice look if you nail focus.
Overall, the PC-Sync is nice. The multiple exposure is nice (but hard to use), the macro mode is fun (but also hard to use) and there are too many problems with the camera overall to justify the ~260 bucks for it. For less than 1/3 of the price you can get a FUJI 300 and get more consistent results. The LOMO is for those who want something more.. they want to use studio lights, do macro or multiple exposures.
