Editorial Reviews
Review
"It's a sizeable tome, yet written with such a storyteller's flare that the pages whizz by like a hover-converted Delorean . . . London: A Travel Guide Through Time is easily the most engaging social history of the capital since the books of Liza Picard a decade ago." —Matt Brown, Londonist

His notes, found in an appendix in the back, are superb, thorough, and nearly as readable as the book itself.
This is a good choice for anyone interested in London, England, history, and/or travel.

Still, this is a wonderful book and I highly recommend it. I found it difficult to put down, and it made me want to go and hear the author talk or take one of his tours.
The format of the book is as a travel guide around the different eras of London, from Shakespearean to Medieval to Victorian, describing to the reader what they will see...from well known sights and buildings to the minutiae of the everyday activity and what you as a time travelling tourist could do and see. I loved the style of Dr Green's writing and how it seemed he was a real tour guide talking directly to you. The depth of knowledge and the obvious effort that has been put in to this book is astounding, a truly enjoyable and thrilling read. If you have taken the time to read this review and have even a smidgen of interest in the vast history of the amazing city of London then please buy this book. You will not regret it.
To do this convincingly a writer needs to have immense grasp of historical detail, and this the author most certainly has. His research is formidably wide ranging, and his style of writing is both entertaining and convincing.
Amongst the periods he covers are Shakespeare's London, the medieval period, the time of the plague, the late Victorian era, and the Blitz. Anyone with a serious interest in any of these periods will learn much.
Londoners will love this book. It might be an idea also to have Google Street View at hand, if you are not immediately able to visit the locations in person.
I was delighted then, in reading this long anticipated book, to see how his unique voice translates most beautifully into written form - indeed, this book pulses with his trademark energy and zest. Dr Green's great skill is not just that of a historian and a storyteller, but that of a curator; his unique eye and unfettered curiosity leads him to uncover hidden rocks to reveal unexpected and delicious nuggets at every turn. The way in which he collides these ideas and stories in this book makes for a truly fresh and original take on history.
It has made me see London (a city I thought I knew so well) in a whole new light.
As lover of all things historic it's a real treat, and takes you on a tour of London in Shakespearean 1603, medieval 1390, plague struck1665, Victorian 1884, post blitz 1957, and to finish 1716. It is very descriptively written, and takes the form of guided tours through the streets with lots of interesting facts, and information on the sights, smells and sounds of the day, if you close your eyes and use your imagination you can almost be there. A lovely book to keep and read again and again, it would also make a great gift.
