About the Author

A fourth-generation native of Hawaii, Luci Yamamoto grew up with hula lessons and homegrown bananas, but longed for four seasons and city sidewalks. She got as far as college in Los Angeles and law school in Berkeley, followed by a brief stint practicing law, then a career change toward writing. Over the years, especially after working on several editions of Lonely Planet's Hawaii: the Big Island and Kauai titles, she's come full circle from her youthful offhandedness about her extraordinary home islands. Currently living in Vancouver, she feels privileged when kama'aina still consider her a 'local girl.'

We used this travel guide every day during our trip to the Big Island. It proved to be an indispensable companion. The tips on everything from sights to restaurants were extremely helpful. We visited several "off the beaten path" gems thanks to this book. The only downside of the book is that it is organized by region. At times this made it a little difficult to search the book while on the road. We used the Kindle edition, so it may be a little easier to use in paperback.

I used this book for a trip to the Big Island in May 2014.

the Good:
* the way this book is organized makes this a GREAT book to carry with you on your trip. I would hop in the car every day and head out in a different direction with this book, and refer to the sections in the book when I got there to help me decide what to do. I liked the info and the reviews, too.

The Bad:
This book IS three years old. I found a few items that were no longer accurate. For example, the book says to go to the Hilo tourism center to pick up a free historical walking tour of Hilo. Well, the people in the tourism office had no idea what I was talking about. And a few places I went, the book had inaccurate prices. But that happens in 3 years time. Other than that, all the info was the same.

I'll still use this book when I go back and do the Kona side of the island. Even being slightly out of date, I just loved the format, the pictures, and the info provided. I recently picked up a Maui book from another reputable travel guide company, because the Lonely Planet guide to Maui hasn't been updated since 2009, and I was completely disappointed in it. I honestly think I'd rather have dealt with 5 years out of date info in the Lonely Planet book.

I've gone through the entire book and have found it to be a valuable resource for activities and hotels. I plan on using it for tips on food when we actually take our trip in January but it directed me to some resources that I wasn't even aware of for accomodations and the accomodations we've booked look to be better and cheaper than the hotels in the areas.

We are going with a 2 year old and because of that it eliminates a lot of activities, I found the book was very useful in identifying some additional activities that we could do with young children. I'm looking forward to our trip and will be using this book as a guide throughout the entire time.

I found this book very useful on a trip to the Big Island. I originally checked it out of the library, and found so useful I purchased it to take on our trip to Hawaii. Very good descriptions on activities, and directions.

The info was great, but reading a travel book in this format is almost worthless. Sitting on the plane, reading it was fine, but once we were there we could never find the info we needed WHEN we needed it. Buy the actual book.

As I discovered when visiting the Big Island, everything that I did/visited matched accurately with what is stated in this book. Some of the Hawaiian vocabulary in the appendix is essential.

These books are VERY helpful, accurate and spot on to the islands! Having been there several times now, I highly recommend a book like this to guide you. Make sure though, that you get the most current version!

We used this planet as a back up guide. It had more detail than the overall general guide for the Hawaiian Islands. The advantage of having the Kindle meant i could carry that to and it took no more effort
