Rick Steves is great, but ...

... I have found this guide to Ireland to be a great adjunct to him! For one thing, Rick Steves is not complete; he covers what he covers. For example, Sligo Town -- zilch! zip! nada! Lonely Planet Ireland [LP] has a nice section on the town.

So I found I have relied on LP a lot in my travel planning for Ireland. I still use Steves (who has better sections on "eating" and "sleeping," but I like to compare the two. If I decide to take one of these HEAVY guides on our trip -- it will be the LP guide (which is actually heavier than Steves').

Lonely Planet Guides are the best!

Lonely Planet Guides are the everyman's travel guide. They're clear, easy to understand, present reasonably-priced options, and present lots of possibilities for young people, casual travelers, and especially those traveling independently. If I'm traveling outside the U.S. (and that happens frequently), I've usually got a Lonely Planet Guide in my hip pocket. Oh, by the way, don't forget to check LP's up-to-the-minute blog, Thorn Tree ([...] ThornTree can tell you exactly what's happening NOW wherever you're going -- road closures? Check. Hostile post-coup border guards? Check. Yesterday's delicious food from the street vendors in Siem Reap, Cambodia? Check. Train delays crossing the Hungary - Romania border last Tuesday? You got it.

Great Ireland Travel Guide

This was my absolute favorite of several travel books I purchased for an upcoming trip to Ireland. It is very comprehensive, full of very practical information and advice, including highlights, free sights, and inserts with interesting "insights". It contains far more practical information than the DK books, but fewer photographs. I enjoy both, so I really like both styles of travel books (and purchased both). I don't tend to read or use the hotel and restaurant guides in any travel books. Perhaps I am ill-advised, but I put more weight on Tripadvisor reviews. These give me a feel for "the majority opinion" rather than that of only one or a few people compiling recommendations for a book.

I'd say this is the one book to get if you're only going to buy one.

In a day when everything is online, I still love Lonely Planet books. They are truly well done and I find it easier to find information and trip inspiration here than going through net stuff like crazy. I enjoy the fact that these books don't focus solely on high - end accommodations or experiences, but get into the stuff average people can enjoy. The books are laid out in an easy to use format, with enough exquisite photos and detailed side notes to make it fun to read. The clear maps of towns and counties help travel. The book is bulky enough to be all you need, yet small enough to take along in a large pocket or small bag.

Ok for basic information

Lonely Planet books of this nature are generally good and contain the necessary basic information. Recommendations for accomadations and food are often just so-so. Over years of European travel, we have come to religiously look to Rick Steves for recommendations on accomadations and eating. We know that his team actually checks them out and we have never been disappointed. We usually buy two books on an area and read a couple more. This one is good and we recommend it

Had no problems w/Kindle edition

I'm not sure why the other reviewer had problems with the Kindle edition. (Perhaps he purchased the PDF version from Lonely Planet instead of the Kindle edition from Amazon, which I agree, does not work well on a Kindle.) All the Kindle links, search, and other functions worked well on my Kindle keyboard. I originally borrowed the book version from the library and purchased the Kindle edition to avoid carrying a book on my trip. Besides not being able to see photos in color, I prefer the Kindle editions due to the search and bookmark functions.
In terms of content, this guide covered all the areas I traveled to (Dublin, Galway, Aran Islands, Cong, and Connemara) and was a great reference throughout the trip, as Lonely Planet guides have always been in my experience.

Too confusing to navigate

If this is the future of kindle travel guides,I will never buy another. The concept is great. You click on references that drill you down into more detail. But the navigation leaves you bewildered and its just too difficult to quickly find a specific item. Perhaps a better table of contents would help. I don't know. I am in Ireland now and I find it useless.

The book has a lot of information on pubs, restaurants, some hotels but not as much cultural information and descriptions of sights as I would have liked to see. Nice maps and pretty good information on bus/train/transport connections from place to place. Overall I have found it helpful in my travel planning.
