This book, and its relative, the guide to East Africa, got me (and my husband) comfortably through 8 weeks of travel in East Africa. It was equally useful for the trip where I was a woman traveling alone, and the trip I took with my never-been-to-the-third-world dyed-in-the-wool- American husband. The only travellers who PERHAPS might not benefit from this book are people on top-shelf tours that ensure that the travellers' feet never really touch the ground. But I truly think that everyone else will find it well worth the few dollars and the few ounces in their luggage, whether that luggage is a matched leather set or a backpack. the history, the explanations of local occurrences, the accurate and pragmatic tips and techniques for getting around/eating/shopping/sleeping/safari-ing/living are difficult to survive without

I was simply stunned by the number of detailed maps in this book. The amount of information for each region of Kenya is outstanding and well done. If you need to know it - it's in this book. Hotels, restaurants, parks, reserves, tribes, Swahili it's all here. Very nicely organized.

This book was somewhat helpful when I recently spent two months in Kenya, but I found that some of the information was out of date (despite this being an updated edition) and there were many things that should have been mentioned that were not. Although it gives a great overview, for those who are going to be spending a substantial amount of time in Kenya, I would probably opt for the Rough Guide to Kenya, which was more thorough and much more accurate.

This book is perfect for traveling the roads of Kenya. I used it when I spent 9 months in Kenya. It lists every detail of the area very accurately. I would not travel without it.

Lonely Planet giudes are in general great. The guide to Kenya is no exception. The guide not only gives you a great deal of information about where to go and what to see but also lets you learn about the country before you get there. They also describe the country in an interesting and easy to read style. A little knowledge goes a long way when traveling and this guide is filled with useful information.

I've used many of the Lonely Planet Guides on many of our travels, and this book is no exception to their other high quality books; the book provides background, advice and everything else you would expect from an LPG. Recent improvements have included better maps, more colour photos and a list of possible routes and top things to see. Very helpful for people that aren't planning to stay more that a couple of weeks.
The major problem with this book - and its really a problem with books in general, rather than the LPG, is that the prices in it are completely out of date; with the boom in oil prices, the fall in the dollar and the recent troubles in the country the amounts quoted for many things are very inaccurate. Overall a great book for a trip to Kenya, but use the internet before hand to get better pricing information.

I took this book with me to Kenya. My first time in Kenya. I had several places in mind to visit, but did not know how much free time I would have, since I went there to assist in elephant research in the Tsavo East/Rukinga region. This book turned out to be a goldmine! It gives you maps, photos, cultural cues, restaurants, lodges, trails, wildlife areas, and language--ALL BY REGION. It detailed logistics to get from Point A to Point B. It highlighted known interests, and so many other places that I had otherwise not have been aware of. I love this book. I took it everywhere I went while in Kenya and intend to take it back with me on my next trip there. This little book turned out to be a GREAT BIG BOOK...SO INFORMATIVE!!!!
