Some people don't like phrasebooks, because really being able to communicate with somebody means being able to do more than just bust out a useful phrase. If you try to use it to order from a menu your ask directions, you'll most likely butcher the pronunciation. But it is useful for pointing. You point to one kind of question phrase and then a very patient Korean person may be willing to point to an answer phrase. But in Korea, you're better off just finding a young adult (ages 16-30) that can speak a little bit of English.

Why give this book 4 stars then? Because it's quite an entertaining conversation starter! I've pulled this out at bars and shops just to show my Korean friends and have some fun looking up random phrases. Koreans work really hard to study English, which is why I say young adults should be able to help you out even if they are quite shy about it. So it's fun for them to see what phrases make it into the book and reminisce about similar phrases that they studied in school.

So while it may not be practical, it's fun to have around.

I have been in Seoul off and on - for business - for the past year. Despite rumors to the contrary, I find this an extremely difficult language. Most Koreans under the age of thirty have a working knowledge of English. Ordering coffee at Starbuck's is certainly not a problem, restaurants are often a problem, department stores pretty impossible. Once you get used to the sections in this book, at the very least you can point. Certain phrases are just good to know. It may seem stupid, but being able to say "Hello" or "Thank you" is extremely endearing to Koreans and it seems to me that this is the very least we can do. The size makes it easy to carry around and it's the least expensive phrase book I've found.

This is the best book I have ever found for Korean! It teaches you so many phrases. There are categories for every subject from doctors to directions. The person who wrote this book really wrote it for someone who would be traveling to Korea without knowing the language at all. I love that it has the romanization to every phrase so we can pronounce it. This is for beginner to advanced. If you are a polyglot like me, you should definitely get this book. I will be using this book way into the future.

I wish I would have researched this more before buying because I was trusting I was getting a good deal. I paid about $22 after shipping before I realized the newer edition from 2008 is only $9 new and $4 used on here. When I looked at the US price on the back of this one when I got it said $7.99 US. I really feel ripped off. I guess I should know better and do more research in the future. Otherwise the book itself is great.
