Great stories but missing page(s)

The stories are all fabulous, but I had a copy with the same error described by another reader. The last page(s) of one story (ending page 151) are missing! I've never before seen a book with this problem.

This is a great read, but on The tracks in the Sand story, it was cut short. Must be a publication error as the story ended on "it was...". Very infuriating for the last couple of lines to be missing from a story.

Fascinating true travel tales. Perhaps not all are in 'the world's best writers' category, but some real little gems here.

I do like this anthology, but I had expected to love it, as someone who really enjoys reading good travel writing. The Lonely Planet books overall are first-class, but it's stretching things a bit to say these very short true tales are 'from the world's best writers'.

Some of the 34 authors are up in that category, without question. The remarkable 90 year old Welsh writer Jan Morris is included, for example, as are renowned novelists Alexander McCall Smith and Elizabeth George, along with Tahir Shah, the son of Idries Shah.

The writers are across a wide age range, but there is an emphasis on up and coming writers as well as those who first travelled in the Sixties and Seventies and hark back to that era. I'm not sure all of the up and coming writers have really made it just yet, or that publication of a handful of pieces qualifies inclusion in a list of the world's best writers.

Many of the writers refer to experiences which place them firmly in the 40 and under age bracket and their writing gifts are perhaps not fully formed. There are brief biographies in the back of each writer, and I do intend to investigate some of them further.

These pieces of writing are generally relatively short snippets. Many of them focus as much on the mental state of the writer at the time recalled in the piece, as on the experiences of the journeys.
This is sometimes very moving, - Maggie Down's thoughts of her dying mother in Egypt - but sometimes a little annoying.

Almost inevitably, many of the best pieces are the shortest. Less is more, and these pared down works shine. There are some pieces - TC Boyle's Irish summer in particular, along with Jessica Silbers Congo wildlife expedition - where you feel a few pages could have easily been a book.
Francine Prose's Mexican memories past and present are a complete, polished gem, as are Jan Morris' recollections of a few minutes on a Wisconsin roadhouse balcony some seventy years ago. Two stand out pieces from well established authors who truly are superb writers.

A few flaws, this is still a very enjoyable book on the whole and a very good choice for armchair travellers.

Travel Memoirs from the Best

This is a collection of travel memoirs that had a profound effect on the authors. Many of the stories are set in the 60’s and 70’s when these writers were developing stages. Still, these travel narratives are well-written therefore relevant to a modern reader. I identified strongly with Elizabeth George’s story about how her visit to London had influenced her life. My summer session at the University of London was a turning point in my own life. It opened the door to endless possibilities and gave me the confidence to explore more. T.C. Boyles Land of the Green Sheen struck close to home because we are both from smog-choked L.A. and yearn for the simple country life. This nostalgic romp from some of our best travel writers provides insights into why they continue to travel and write about their journey. Surely, one of these tales will hit home.

'World's best writers'? Hmm

'World's best writers'? Hmm, I wouldn't go with that kind of hyperbole, but perhaps that was a decision made by the marketing team and not by the editor(s). There are some interesting stories here, especially in the latter half of the book. Some of the pieces in first half fell short of the mark somehow, with occasional whiffs of the 'I-me-mine' self-involvement that travel writers can easily fall into if not careful. I enjoyed the latest Travelers Tales compile, and also LP's other By the Seat of My Pants collection, more than this LP anthology. And c'mon guys! Just as Robert Twigger's compelling piece on the Egyptian oases is climaxing.......his thought is left dangling mid-sentence, unfinished at the bottom of the page. Turn the page and a brand-new story is featured! One guesses that the error was made by the Chinese printers, but still, consumers are not warned of this amateur presentation. I have long been a LP supporter, singing its praises in my own travel articles dating back to the '80s, but really, this was an egregious mistake made by a major publication. The most important part
