Alan Silvestri composed the theme music and it's terrific (he did the Lara Croft movies and Cast Away).
Secondly, this is practically the only place you can find the quirky gems of Los Angeles-based musician, GUS (aside from his cover of Don't Fear the Reaper on the original Scream soundtrack).
Thirdly, the credit-roll song, "Woman" is a stunner; a sort of neo-Bond song soaked in the blues.
And finally, the rest of this disc is an ecclectic tribute to the blues. It is top-notch, top-drawer, the best, the apex!

This is a great disk. One I always take with me. Nice variety, all pretty laid back type of music. I originally bought it for the Zombies cover "She's not there". Many of the songs it contains are not actually in the movie. They are songs from which the director derived inspiration or that Samuel L Jackson hummed during the movie. Fortunately, that means they're on the disk because they are good music not just good background music for a film. Speaking as someone without much knowledge of the genre I enjoy the blues tracks which constitute a large portion of the disk but it also contains, hip hop, rock, and pop rock. A definite crowd-pleaser.

I love this movie/soundtrack but this release is abysmal.

This is a review of this actual rather incomplete release of the soundtrack not the full wonderful 5 star soundtrack.

1. It's missing loads of tracks!

1). Elvis Presley - Santa Claus is Back in Town
2). Dion - Rocking Around the Christmas Tree
3). Dean Martin - Let it Snow! Let it Snow! Let it Snow!
4). Dan Seals & John Ford Coley - I'd Really Love to See You Tonight (The Linen Song!!)
5). Marvin Gaye & Tammy Terrell - If I Could Build My World Around You
6). John Williams - The Long Goodbye theme
7. Tracy Bonham - Free

2. The version of Many Rivers to Cross on the album isn't even the version from the movie. On the soundtrack we have a cover by The Tom Tom Club. It was Jimmy Cliff's version in the movie.

3. As well as missing songs on the album there even appears to be a song that as far as I'm aware isn't even in the movie. It's not listed in the credits at the end of the film. - Bring it On Home to Me. - Otis Redding and Carla Thomas.

4. We have the main title theme where's the rest of Alan Silvestri's wonderful score from this movie? I'd gladly pay for a separate CD if necessary but after 19 years it's still not available!!

The underground-dancemusic makers of the 1980's, The Tom Tom Club, deliver a trip-hop -reggae masterpiece on this disc in their cover of "Many Rivers to Cross"! It is worth the price of this CD alone.
For more of their genre-bending, check out their zydeco turn on 2004's romping compilation "Creole Bred," singing "Only the Strong Survive."
Actually both albums rarely leave my cd player! Put them on for a rootsy tribute to southern blues!

This may be a little late for anyone who cares, but the song is I'd Really Love to See You Tonight by England Dan & John Ford Coley. It was first out in 1976. I have it on the Rhino collection Super Hits of the 70's: Have a Nice Day, Vol. 18. As for the movie, it's great. I watch it every Christmas, along with those other Christmas classics, Lethal Weapon and Die Hard.

Along with "Not talking about the linen" and "Free" by Tracy Bonham it's also missing the Xmas song too. "It's Christmas time Pretty Baby" It sounds like Elvis, but I'm not sure. But at least it has Lady Marmalade and Manish Boy. Maybe they needed a second CD.

I wonder if he'd still call Jars of Clay "unknown"? They have two platinum albums and a third that's on the way to platinum status...
Anyway, I'm getting this for the song the Jars have on here, "The Chair". It's one of their very best, ironically.
The rest of the soundtrack seems really solid, too! (Thus the five stars) I guess no one will ever look at this anyway, though, so it doesn't much matter what I say. :-)

Gary Craze (reviewer below) is right ... Free is not the same as Freed .. Free was an out-take from the recording of "The Burdens of Being Upright". Though "Free" has been performed live, only it's reworked version "Freed" made it to an album. They share a piece of the chorus, the words are very different. The words of "Freed" "somthing inside me is beggin to be free" seems more suitable to the conflict inside Charlie Baltimore. Interesting why this CD is missing so many tracks.
