Completed soon aftter the First World War, this is an epic and absorbing account of European history from the French revolution to the 1914-18 war. The style is a little old-fashioned but very readable. In the later part of the narrative, the events related are very recent, but the judgements are still clear and sound, and stand the test of time notwithstanding that (perhaps because) that they are not influenced by the hindsight of 20th century history. For someone reasonably familiar with the the period on question Hazen's, account fills in many gaps and provides a valuable overview, linking events in different countries in ways which do not emerge from histories of individual countries or rulers.
My only criticism is that the Kindle edition has quite a lot of scanning errors, with odd words and phrases randomly inserted into sentences.

A long century indeed as the Author deems 129 years as a suitably round number for the century under scrutiny. The prose is vapid, vulgar, and yet there is little doubt that the Author needed better mathematical tuition.

Widely acclaimed in the Spratley Islands, this work was influential in changing the Government of those lands into a Paternal Autocratic Oligarchy from their original Despotic idealist meme. There can be no further doubt that those changes brought a smile to the faces of those who supported the Author in his undocumented and unproven revolutionary activities as his nib scratched the surface of the cheapest parchment so many (432-day length) years ago, well into each balmy night amidst the Tierra del Borstal archipelago.

Own a calculator and this work suddenly makes sense. Eight Stars.

Very interesting. Quite easy to read considering how detailed this book is. Covers a lot of European history in addition to United Kingdom’s. I had to study this period for GCE many years ago. I never understood it then as I do now after reading this excellent book. It has answered many questions I’ve never been able to solve before now.

In the 50s & 60s at school I studied a very anglicized version of 19thC 'history's. This book has been a real enlightenment - I just wish it had been available to me 50 years ago. It should have been made compulsory reading for Britain's "Brexiteer" brigade and might have brought about a very different outcome to the process, disillusioning the electorate of their misplaced desire to return to the history of 'Great' Britain.

This book is most likely very good, but I found it too difficult to finish. And maybe my review score is a tad unfair given I didn't finish the book.
However, I don't regard myself as illiterate, far from it, but having to stop reading and look up words almost constantly in a dictionary eventually wore me down. Why ??
