2024 Stonewall Book Award Honor Book for Young Adult Literature

"A boldly authentic new voice in queer fiction." —Abdi Nazemian, author of Stonewall Honor book
Like a Love Story and The Chandler Legacies

Two track and field athletes find an unexpected but powerful love in this unapologetically blunt and unforgettably real YA debut.

Sebastian Villeda is over it. Over his rep. Over his bros. Over being "Bash the Flash," fastest sprinter in South Jersey. His dad is gone, his mom is dead, and his stepfather is clueless. Bash has no idea what he wants out of life. Until he meets Sandro.

Sandro Miceli is too nice for his own good. The middle child in an always-growing, always-screaming Italian family, Sandro walks around on a broken foot to not bother his busy parents. All he wants is to get out and never look back.

When fate—in the form of a party that gets busted—brings these two very different boys together, neither of them could’ve predicted finding a love that they’d risk everything for…

Excellent coming of age novel

Excellent coming of age novel
This is a genuinely exceptional coming of age story.I found it very engaging emotionally (I cried three times reading it) and it has stuck with me for several days after finishing it. Categorizing it as a YA novel might be a bit misleading. While I hope kids do read it, to me it felt like a novel that just happened to feature two teenage protagonists. This is a book that doesn't pull its punches, but at the same time is very joyful in many ways. I love Bash and Dro. Like Aristotle and Dante before them, I love Bash and Dro. I loved the way the book demonstrates how two young men can care deeply for each other, how they can be gentle and be bros at the same time. I love what this book can mean for kids today who play sports and have to navigate how homophobic that world can be. I hope high school coaches read this book.I'm a fan of John Updike's Harry Angstrom books and would love to read more about Bash and Dro somewhere down the line in their lives. Also, while I don't subscribe to the idea that making things into movies is the highest form of cultural expression, I do think this book would make one hell of a movie. The author has a degree in screenwriting, so let me just put that suggestion into the universe.I've already bought copies of The Long Run to give to friends. I can't recommend it highly enough.

Shout-out to my favorite book reviewer, Aaron, for recommending this book to me. Just when I was starting to bore of books in this genre, here comes James Acker to change my mind. What I loved most about THE LONG RUN is how familiar the character are. I immediately related to both Bash and Sandro and their individual plights. Bash is the life of the party, the popular kid at school who everyone, even teachers, like. However, when you have to be so many things to so many different people, the real you gets lost in the shuffle. Then there is Sandro. Equally just as liked but somehow invisible to the most important people in his life.

This story is so beautiful and so fresh. There are so many tropes exclusive to queer fiction and Acker does a great job of veering away from the expected. There were quite a few heartbreaking moments which were to be expected but what took me completely by surprise is how funny this book is. The frank discussions about sexy times had me ROFL-ing at 3 AM when I should have been sleeping.

As far as what didn't work for me. The only thing I didn't like was that the book ended. I know a story is well-crafted whenever I find myself missing the characters long after the book has ended.

James Acker over the course of a few days has become one of my favorite writers, standing alongside such titans as Bill Konigsberg, Jeff Zentner, and Phil Stamper. I look forward to reading more of his work. Also, for those of you who enjoy audiobooks, the one for this book is well-done. I cannot recommend this book enough! I promise you won't be disappointed.

This Coming-of-Age book really captures the New Jersey tough guy culture I knew. Our two heroes let us feel the pain of growing up gay in such a culture. And the arc of their growth is stunning, believable and an inspiration. Great language, multi-faceted characters and wonderful prose round out this stunner.

This was such a good YA novel.

The conversations felt real. The characters demonstrate a healthy relationship with boundaries and respect. They demonstrate growth and aren't afraid to outgrow and shed bad habits and bad friends. In the end they don't sacrifice themselves and their individual dreams for a relationship but don't trash the relationship either and that feels like a story that doesn't often get told. A well told story.

"There's no movies for boys like me," one of the characters says. But thank god there is this book. Unrushed, but never dragging; shrewdly detailed, but never cluttered. Acker spares us stocked characters and the ubiquitous party scene. It's substantial without being ponderous, artful without being pompous, and clever without trying too hard. This writing is good and real. What a relief to know that something this good is out there.

I loved so many of the descriptions, unmotivated T-Rex lol, the original way the different POVs were written. I immediately loved the story. Cried so many times over how Sandro's family treated him. Laughed so hard over parts and again loved how the awkward were told. Would love a HEA sequel for what happens after college, cause I hate endings for senior year romances.

I read a TON, but only very rarely post reviews. When I was close to the end of this book, I abruptly stopped reading to send messages to several of my friends, recommending The Long Run. I almost didn't read it myself; the cover art evoked images of a decades old book, and, while some LGBTQ novels from long ago are fantastic, the setting in time is not always what I want to read. It turns out that this novel is entirely contemporary, or at the very least, timeless. I've read many "coming of age" novels, and this one just felt particularly REAL to me. It often took me back to my own experiences as a youth, struggling to figure out how I was supposed to move forward as a queer man. I won't say that reading this novel will change your life, but I think that most people will certainly enjoy it, and find the characters very vibrant and real.

Loved it. Wish there'd be a second book/sequel to their story. Want them to have a happy ending and getting through a long-distance relationship.

i felt. i sobbed. i picked up my fallen pieces to reattach with Scotch tape.

this is what i call a coming-of-age story: a grand character study underpinned by grounding pathos, steering clear of over-sentimentality and caricatures, to deliver the most unflinchingly raw take on two young souls becoming - becoming unbound, becoming themselves, becoming each other's safe harbor.

entering their senior year, Bash and Sandro are without a compass as everything they've managed to side step creeps to a head. the only option is to confront the bone-deep weariness head on, or be crushed under its weight. it's everything all at once: playing to outside expectations; losing sight of one's authentic self, with whom they've had no more than a brief acquaintance after a lifetime of donning masks to bluff and conceal; navigating the topsy turvy world of familial relationships, toxic masculinity, open communication and purposeful introspection. it's fear of the unknown. it's dread of being alone. they work so, so hard for their happiness, and with each passage, unerringly prove that they deserve every single bit of it.

hereby making this book my personality for an indeterminate amount of time while i continue my failed attempts to ignore the storm cloud of bereavement hovering above me ✌️

dear author,

i would do anything for a sequel, an epilogue - heck, even a two line update on their future. ANYTHING.

sincerely,
your new biggest fan
