I like Henry Makow works. this was written before the advent of MGTOW on the net and highlights the problems of a one sided world against men, in all modern nations. Men, you need to be aware of this. Foreign Brides are no better than native women in your own nation are. But I am sure there are more comprehensive books and articles on the net and youtube than what this offers. But you won't be wasting your money but this is not the end of this subject. By this time, things have gotten much worse for men. Be aware of that. All the same, I am a fan of Makow ad his site on the net.

unhappily ever after

I bought this book years ago thinking it was a happily-ever-after story about an American with a Filipino wife. Just getting around to reading it now, before I gave it away, it turns out it is far from that. Author Makow is an English PhD, board-game designer, and crank-pot conspiracy theorist who gets married to a girl 25 years younger than him only to discover she has no interest in him. After moving back to North America, she spends all her time online meeting other men, throws violent tantrums whenever she doesn't get her way, and reports him to the police for abuse whenever he tries to stand up to her. Eventually he tricks her into returning to the Phillipines without a return ticket, and they divorce. Whew!

Some but not all of the criticisms of one-, two-, and three-star reviewers are justified. Makow is obviously very immature, and he admits as much. He is also extremely gullible, and it should have been obvious to him that this girl was not really interested in him. However, he is not a predator, and many of his criticisms of western women are standard fare among American men today.

A few specific criticisms rebutted:

Makow did not go the Phillipines looking for young girls; rather, he tried to make contact with a number of women in the Phillipines, aged 20 to 40, and this was the one who responded to him; additionally, she initially lied about her age, saying she was three years older than she was.

Makow did not go the to the Phillipines looking for a "slave"; in fact, he does all the cooking and housework after they return to Canada. He also does all the girl's homework when she goes to trade-school to get a license as a nurse's aide.

Makow did not have a complex; as the number of negative reviewers on Amazon who disparage him by calling him short, fat, bald, old, and non-virile attest, the issue of a man's "dominance" comes from female selection, not male fantasy. The author's desire to be loved and treated the same as a tall, younger man with a full head of hair isn't unnatural or reprehensible, even if it is unrealistic.

Makow did not ignore Phillipine cultural norms; in several instances he admits to making faux pas due to ignorance of Phillipine custom, but his apology and expectation of understanding is not unreasonable.

Again, the author is obviously immature and gullible, and he suffered the consequences. Do you really need to read the story? Will it enrich your life? No and no. Unless you are thinking of trying to meet a mail-order bride, in which case I would definitely recommend reading this book.

An open-ended story

Henry Makow, inventor of the "Scruples" board game, plays the role of the last honorable man looking for the last honorable wife well. As I'm reading along, I'm searching for clues as to where this relationship is going to end up - Nirvana, or train wreck? Unfortunately, there isn't enough information to generalize from Henry's spoiled and ultimately treacherous beauty queen Cecilia to Filipina culture at large. Was she a bad apple, or representational of international sexual politik?
Although you're expecting to discover some problems due to cultural difference alone, what you don't expect is the rapid descent into post-Sam Kineson domestic hell that explodes almost out of nowhere once they marry and move back to Canada. Henry's honest take on cultural feminism at the end might have served better as a prologue; but the bigger question is: Will Henry go back and try again?

Should've gone to Thailand...

I agree with all the comments above. I recommend Thailand...the Buddhist culture there is less likely to cause the problems he experienced with his Pinay wife.

I will also say that the biggest problem men experience with Mail-Order brides is that they bring them back to the US. In their own countries, they have a strong sense of culture and don't want to "lose face" in their communities. Marrying an older/wealthier guy is not a problem there, as many women marry for financial security in Asia. After all, things are much "closer to the edge" in Asia. A poor husband in Asia and you could literally starve to death. I live here...I know.

However, take that woman out of Asia and she arrives in the US/UK/wherever and suddenly she realizes she can do much better. She doesn't have her family watching over her, and there is no loss of face involved. Wait 3 years, get your Green Card, and then file for divorce. It's really that easy. In these countries, she'll be getting hit on by men her own age, and she can have everything she has with you but with a much younger/more attractive man. She'd be crazy not to dump your old butt!

So, those who would read this book for the purpose of finding a Mail Order Bride, consider it from their standpoint. Imagine if you were married to an old lady (30 years your senior). If you had been destitutely poor and she gave you a good life, you might be happy in that relationship. However, if she then took you to a place where younger, more beautiful women with the same level of success were competing for your favors, would you stay with her? If you could have everything she gave you (in a much younger package) would you stay? No.

So, if you want to marry a beautiful young girl, do so, but stay in their home country. There, she will be thankful to have you every day, and will make all your fantasies and dreams come true. Take her to your home country at your own risk. It does sometimes work, but not often from what I've seen.
