In the last month I have read THE DEAD AND THOSE ABOUT TO DIE by John C McManus and this book. I am currently reading JUNO BEACH by Tim Saunders. This book is a classic and time has not changed the way this book is written so that reader wants to read on and even learn more details. This book goes into great detail about both Allied and German pre-invasion planning and activities. I have started to read other books that really focus on specific armies and actions. THE LONGEST DAY will give you a great start for those who want to delve into detail. For example, the book by McManus is about the 1st Infantry Division's experience at Bloody Omaha. JUNO tells the story of the Canadian 3rd Infantry Division and its accompanying support units. Read THE LONGEST DAY and you may want more. I was at Omaha and Utah Beaches in May 2015 and reading this book enables me to correlate what I saw with what I have read. Buy it!

Decent book but not a great book

Decent book but not a great book - I say this is because I've read the Stephen Ambrose book about D-Day and found it to be absolutely great, so in comparison, this book comes up just a little short - also for such an amazingly important day with so much action and so many stories, I found the book to be really short in length. Buy it, but don't spend too much on it, and don't get your expectations too high here.....

Big disappointing

I bought the Kindle edition because I had fond memories of the original book that I read many years ago. One of the main reason to buy it was the book description that says "for this new edition of The Longest Day, the original photographs used in the first 1959 edition have been reassembled and painstakingly reproduced". However I had a big surprise when I checked the Kindle edition. No photos were included. Maybe the book description was taken for the paperback edition but I felt disappointed and misguided.
