As I read this book, I found myself laughing out loud with tears rolling down my face, then crying for real, then back to laughing ... The grammar and spelling could have used another pass, but it feels like a bunch of my buddies got together and started swapping "no s(kidding)t, there I was" stories.

We all are subjects to the filtered view of the war through both the lense of Hollywood and Media. If you ever wanted to get an unfiltered snapshot of what our men and women endured, this is your ticket. Yes, the grammar isn't that of a Harvard Brit Lit grad student; who cares? You aren't reading an article in Modernism and Modernity- you're reading a heartfelt perspective from an American who chose to serve a cause greater than him/herself. These stories make the dust, sweat and tears palpable and bring you closer to the war than which you've ever been. These kids interweave their emotions and sacrifices into each tale. Step away from your understanding of the war and step into this book.

This book is powerful, emotional and entertaining. The stories are raw and true to life because of the approach taken by Holmes. The contributing authors wrote their stories from the heart and the lack of intervention by the editor adds to the often gritty substance. Some of the entries appear to have been written by kids fresh out of high school while others could have been written by award winning authors. This only serves to add to the real, heartfelt storytelling.

Just bought it last night, and even between my 2 1/2yo and 15mo I still can hardly put it down. Already I've laughed and cringed simultaneously, cried for my fallen brothers in arms, forced myself to keep reading even though my husband's over there now, and prayed for a crapton of people I'll never meet. The editing is pretty rough in some stories, but it makes them more authentic and I obviously care so much that I can't put it down and wish I could buy Kindle copies for a dozen friends.

I've always had a problems sharing my stories from Iraq with my family and friends(mainly because they just simply weren't there to experience it). But this book gives me something I can relate to, feels good to know that there are other people that feel the same way as I do, and have seen the same things I have. Very good read. I enjoy the fact that there ARE minor grammatical errors and punctuation mistakes, its a tell-tale sign that these stories are LEGIT. There wasn't an editor who "juiced" up the stories to make them more "Holly Wood friendly", these stories are told the way they happened. The truth. Will recommend to every one of my fellow soldiers.

Excellent book; anyone who has ever deployed will be able to relate to at least one of the stories.

The stories themselves alternate in intensity which gives the reader a bit of a breather. I think doing that was well conceived and something that while important for any reader, is especially so for the veterans themselves who can probably relate too many of the stories.

As I said, excellent read. I encourage folks to read it.

Great collection of real life soldier's stories, gives a good all around multi-perspective view of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Brought back many memories and made me realize there are many people who had similar reactions to things as I did. If you are a soldier I am sure you will connect with at least one of these stories and probably more. If you are a civilian you this will give you a good look into the experiences that shaped many soldiers and contributed to how they are today.
Currently only 1/3 of the way through the book, plan on finishing in the next 24 hours.

Being in the military and never having deployed this book gives a clear picture of how the war affects everyone military or not. The stories not only those who served or those who only saw the aftermath the war has on those here are amazing
