It charts the harrowing mission of an inexperienced British doctor who arrives in the Bosnian capital as its defenders try to repel a determined ‘rebel’ push into the west of the city, in what was one of the fiercest battles of the three year long siege.
Her task is to extricate a desperately ill Bosnian child and accompany him to Britain for life saving treatment.
During the course of her brief stay she comes into contact with a panoply of characters who encapsulate the spirit of Sarajevo that made it such a magnet for humanitarians, journalists and adventurers.
The Longest Winter is a story of tragedy, of hope, and courage that accurately reflects Sarajevans’ desire not to bend to terror and their efforts to maintain standards in the most appalling of circumstances.
The overriding message of the novel is one of love and compassion in a time of brutality. Sullivan’s love for Sarajevo and its people shines through. It’s an excellent novel. I commend it to you. At a time when the world is becoming increasingly violent, the lessons of Sarajevo need to be learned. We should heed the message that Kevin Sullivan has so eloquently imparted.
