About the Author

Bob Dixon entered that United States Air Force in 1970 at age 18. When he left it in 1977, he spent the next 14 years in night school to earn his Associate's and Bachelor's degrees. Along the way, he worked for Honeywell and other major corporations as an employee or consultant in supplier management, global sourcing, and quality. In December 2010, Bob founded The Military Civilian Career Coaching Connection (MC4), a LinkedIn group that partners pro-bono coaches and mentors with U.S. military veterans to help them successfully transition into civilian careers. He's been featured on numerous national media outlets and has been a guest speaker at such venues as Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Georgia Tech University, Worcester Poly Technical Institute, Rutgers University, Drew University, and some of the largest corporations in Israel, Japan, the U.S., and China. I'm not surprised by the intense and passionate style of this book. I've known Bob Dixon for over twenty years as a friend and former colleague and this is the way I've always know him to be. Look Forward is a mirror image of Bob's soul, the way he thinks, the way he feels, the way he acts. I wish Bob and Bobbie all the best in their journey forward. Knowing Bob, it will be nothing less than first class.

This book is a wonderful story in overcoming adversity. It is inspiring to see how people react and grow when life gives less than desirable outcomes. What shines through is a father's love for his son. Highly recommended for many different people: from parents, and responders to anyone who has faced a life altering accident. Best of luck to the Dixon family.

The author does a great job of setting you up within his own emotional and psychological journey. Before getting too far into the details of the accident and the medical aspects, you are able to empathize with how one copes in such times of tragedy and feelings of helplessness (and hopelessness). You can't help but reflect on what it takes to move on and, indeed, to Look Forward.

It's hard to put down a book that tells a fun story but it's even harder to pick up a book that tells a grippingly horrific story - a true story of a father nearly losing a son. In fact, knowing the nature of the story, I was reluctant to try. But, as a compliment to the author, once I picked it up I could not put it down until the end.

Look Forward: A Father and Son's Journey of Healing is well-written and more than well-worth the read. In it, Bob Dixon tells the story of being at his remote job in Shanghai, 7,000 miles from his wife Kristy in New Hampshire and Bobby, his 30-something son in Massachusetts. On his way to work one morning he receives the news that Bobby has been in an accident and that he is near death. What follows is a ride as long in emotional endurance as is his flight in miles to get home.

The reader is taken through the moments surrounding the van wrongly crossing into Bobby's oncoming motorcycle, the weeks of hanging on the precipice of death, the initial questions of why and the months of deciding whether to live - to live a life much changed, wheelchair and all.

Bobby is so damaged that, while in an ICU unit and in a coma, his body struggles with the ability to live. Later, while in a rehab facility and with the knowledge that he has become a paraplegic, his mind struggles with the desire to live. This brings Bob's own thoughts back to a time when, after leaving the military, he was ready to take a handful of pills. But, knowing his son needed him, he chose to live. Decades later, in so many ways, Bobby needed his father again. You could say that it was the son's need of his father that, in both cases, saved a life.

I finished reading this book within 3 hours, it was a true story based on my friend's real life experiences. I have known Bob for many years since we first met in Shanghai. He is a great writer, and I follow his blogs. After reading the book, I found Bob is also a great father who cares deeply about his son and family. I'd highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to gain deeper knowledge on father & son relationships, first responder, and how to deal with family tragedy and aftermath.

An excellent example of why we should never go through a day without counting our blessings and remembering to say "I love you".
The story of Bobby's emergence from a coma on Thanksgiving would bring tears of joy to a glass eye. A quick and easy read with a message that needs to reinforced in all of us.

This really delves into the relationship between a man and his grown son! So glad I stumbled upon it. This is a gripping real life account of what happens after the first responders go home and the families pick up the pieces and learn to live with new challenges and how they overcome.

This is really a great read for anyone who likes a good story. What Bob and Bobby have been through is almost unimaginable, but their story brings the reader in and makes what they went through all too real.
