This book drives us to Jesus because it gets our focus off of ourselves and our circumstances. The author ushers us into a place where we develop the needed perspective to look to Jesus, assured in the trustworthiness of His character and the faithfulness of how He's dealt with us in the past.
Dawn Klinge starts in a vulnerable position, admitting one of the wounded parts of her life and the struggle she had to see above those waves in order to view the God who orchestrated (or allowed) those events at Mars Hill church. Follow that with the honesty of her testimony and the journey of making her faith her own reveals that this book is full of humility and wisdom. She comes as an author who walks the road of learning, rather than as someone who stands above to tell others like it is. Her writing is gentle, yet reveals the glory of the One she writes for.
I love that she asks this questions, "How do I actually move that word, trust, from something I understand in my head, to something I understand more fully in my heart?" So many of us have struggled with moving head knowledge to heart knowledge - knowing whether we really do have faith, or trust in Christ. I really enjoyed her expounded on why we can't force ourselves to deepen that faith and trust as well.
Throughout the book, my favorite part is her emphasis on the gospel throughout. Through stories, quotes, verses and wisdom, she brings it back to the gospel, reiterating that our salvation by faith is what trust in Jesus stems from. I think Chapter 5 (Trusting God in the Daily Mundane), particularly her story about trusting God with where He has her even when her heart longs for another place, specifically resonated with me because that's exactly where I am right now as well.
This book will be an encouragement to people everywhere. It helps ease the habit of anxiety and worry because it draws you into the steadfastness and reliability of God's faithfulness and unwavering goodness. Each chapter is rich with Scripture and also displayed by personal accounts of the author in how God taught her, and continues to teach her, those important characteristics. She share real experiences from her own life in every single chapter and it makes an easy and engaging read.
As I sat down with my copy of Look to Jesus, I was amazed at the obedience of this writer and her honesty about her own personal journey. Throughout the book, Dawn shares personal stories of her experiences with letting go of worry. Her walk with the Lord has never been easy, but her experience of giving her worry to The Father is sweet.
Dawn is relatable and wise, and there were many times throughout the book that I thought, “When can I get coffee with this writer?!” As someone who has struggled deeply with the realities of worry and anxiety, I experienced peace while reading Look to Jesus. With Scripture-saturated chapters and profound quotes from other writers, this book is a wonderful guide to encourage you to take a step away from worry and a step toward trusting in God.
Look to Jesus is a quick, enjoyable, and thought-provoking read. I’d encourage anyone with anxiety or worry to pick up this book today. Or, maybe someone you know struggles with the difficulties of anxiety and worry. Take the first step to healing and understanding today. There are many books about worry and trust, but there is no other book like Look to Jesus.
Grab a cup of tea and settle comfortably into a quiet place where you can intimately rejoice in our Savior. Practicing the Biblical concepts that Dawn shares will move you not only toward greater peace, but a stronger relationship with Jesus. It's always wonderful to learn from women of God who realize that where they have been and where they are going are very different places. Always growing, Dawn encourages other women to do the same.
