Successful photographer Chase Sullivan is in Napa Valley to do a photo shoot at his brother Marcus's vineyard. While most photographers are sticklers for the perfect background, weather, or accessories, Chase is a firm believer that the true magic of photography happens at unguarded moments. There has to be an emotional connection otherwise the shot is just cold and calculated with no real value. In his line of work beautiful women are commonplace and he's become a bit jaded but nothing prepared him for an encounter with a woman like Chloe.
Understandably Chloe is more than a little uncomfortable accepting Chase's help. Her ex-husband's attack took an emotional toll on her and if you've been attacked by a man who professes to love you then you aren't exactly chomping at the bit to trust another one. Fortunately, Chase is a good guy and honestly only wants to help her, though he doesn't exactly play fair by taking her to the guesthouse at the vineyard rather than the hotel like she requested. Chase realizes that Chloe is very special (even though she isn't `model beautiful') and fears that if he takes her into town he won't see her again. At first Chloe is extremely reluctant to open up to Chase about why she was on the road that night but as they get to know each other, and cave into their mutual attraction, she begins to trust him with the truth about what happened as well as other aspects of her personality, such as her love of quilting. While Chloe's determined to keep her relationship with Chase on a strictly friends with benefits level, Chase knows that he's in love with Chloe and he's willing to do whatever he has to in order to convince her to stay with him.
THE LOOK OF LOVE is a beautiful love story with a few surprises and many heartwarming moments. I was very impressed with Chloe and her choice to escape the controlling and abusive husband - so many women aren't that brave. Chase is the epitome of a sexy and supportive male but at times that seems to be in direct conflict with his desire for her. Bella Andre does a wonderful job bringing these characters to life and showing readers exactly what makes them tick. One of the things I really loved about this story is Chloe's love for quilting and how it plays into the rest of the story. I know, it seems simple but there's something endearing about how she uses her love of matching colors and patterns to help Chase with the models attire. This story has it all - raw passion, emotional connections, suspense, and a plain ole' fun element that makes it a delight to read.
THE LOOK OF LOVE is the first title in Ms. Andre's new SULLIVAN'S series. I'm definitely looking forward to learning more about Chase's siblings - especially the twins they've dubbed Naughty and Nice. However, after reading this story and coming to know some of Marcus' story I'm definitely looking forward to the next release.
The next book is this series, FROM THIS MOMENT ON (Marcus & Nicola), is due to be released in September 2011.
Chase is world renowned photographer he meets Chloe one night on the side of the road in a rainstorm when her car breaks down. Sparks fly instantly. Chloe is running from a crazy abusive ex and Chase wants to help her no matter the cost even his heart which is quickly belonging to Chloe. This is a beautiful love story. Just the begining of the fantastic Sullivan family series.
Chase is on his way to older brother, Marcus' wine vineyard in Napa Valley, where he will be doing a photo shoot for the next few days. En route he finds Chloe on the side of the road in the middle of a rainstorm, after her car ended up in a ditch. He is immediately, instantly drawn to her, in a way he's never experienced before. Chloe; however, is extremely wary and distrustful. Chase manages to convince Chloe to let him help her, and he takes her to the guest house at the vineyard, where he will be staying for the next few days. Working slowly and patiently to get Chloe to trust him, Chase convinces her to spend the next few days with him at the vineyard. From there the story quickly progresses to the HEA. Overall, it's a quick, satisfying read, and one which I'm sure many people would enjoy. I had a few issues with it, one of which, as I mentioned before, was all the sex scenes. This isn't because I'm a prude--far from it--but it just got to be too much; one sex scene after another, with a little story in between, and eventually I found myself skipping over them--and some of them are loooooong. One sex scene last an entire chapter!!!
I also found it a little unrealistic that every one of Chase's siblings were so perfect. There are eight Sullivan children in all, and every one of them is gorgeous, sexy as sin, AND successful as all get out. Ugh. There are a couple of "normal" siblings, one of which is a librarian and the other a fire fighter, but other than that everyone of them is soooooo successful! Even the brother who is a mechanic is not JUST a mechanic, but rather at the age of 29 he's a business mogul with a string of mechanic shops around California, and he races cars during his spare time. Really?! Then there's the brother who is a mega movie star; Chase who is a famous photographer; Marcus (who I loved) the wealthy vineyard owner; of course there's a star athlete, (what perfect family would be complete without one?) the brother who is a professional baseball player; and a sister who is a successful choreographer. For me it was too much, and for that reason I don't think I'll be reading anymore books in the series...that and all the sex. It really got to the point where I couldn't take it anymore in this book.
On the other hand, IMO, Ms. Andre did a wonderful job with the instant connection, almost "love at first sight" aspect of the story. Within an hour of meeting Chloe, Chase knows that she's special to him. He can't understand it, and even think it's crazy, but at the same time he's accepting of the situation. I loved that about him. As much as I liked Chase's character, however, I couldn't connect with Chloe. Seems like she was married to a wealthy man, who was a controlling husband. But when she told her story, I didn't feel any sympathy for her. Any pain and unhappiness she may have suffered, didn't seem real. I was also irritated with her for refusing to be with Chase. So what, you can screw his brains out, hour after hour, but you can't be his girlfriend?! I also felt like she was outright lying to herself, because it was obvious to a blind person that what she felt for Chase was way more than sex.! Then there's the time she got angry at Chase because she didn't couldn't believe that he loved her, that he wasn't with her just for the sex. By this point, I wanted to slap the heifer silly, because wasn't SHE the one who was insisting that they keep things "just sex?" Ugh! In short, she started to get on my last nerve! Anyhow, realizing that Chloe has been hurt--even before she finally confides in him--Chase focuses all his attention on getting her to open up and trust him, while trying not to spook her. Also, despite all the sex, surprisingly the couple don't fall into bed the first night they meet--which happens all too often in contemporary romances, and is one of the reasons I don't read them too often. Chase and Chloe actually wait a couple of days--yes I know that two days isn't much, but for a CR that's like waiting a month. LOL I did find it amusing that when they finally do have sex, the way Chase acted you'd think he'd been waiting months to have sex with her, rather than a mere two days. Haha! Anyhow, that's my take on the story. It was okay, 3 stars. Happy reading!
